What is remote technology risk management?

Remote Technology Risk Management refers to the process of identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with the use of technology in remote work environments. This includes ensuring data security, managing access controls, and developing incident response plans for employees who work outside traditional office settings. Professionals in this field help organizations prevent data breaches, comply with regulations, and maintain business continuity as more employees work remotely. Effective risk management is crucial for protecting sensitive information and maintaining the integrity of IT systems in a distributed workforce.

What are some common challenges faced in a remote technology risk management role, and how can they be effectively addressed?

In a remote technology risk management role, one common challenge is maintaining effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams, especially when assessing and mitigating risks across different time zones. To address this, professionals often rely on clear documentation, regular virtual meetings, and collaborative risk management tools. Additionally, staying updated on emerging threats and ensuring consistent security practices across remote environments can be demanding, but leveraging centralized frameworks and continuous training helps maintain a strong risk posture. Building strong relationships with IT, compliance, and business stakeholders also supports more proactive and coordinated risk management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote technology risk management professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Remote Technology Risk Management, you need a solid understanding of IT risk assessment, cybersecurity principles, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in information systems or a related field. Familiarity with risk management frameworks (such as NIST or ISO 27001), GRC (governance, risk, and compliance) tools, and relevant certifications like CRISC or CISSP is typically expected. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective written communication are essential soft skills for evaluating risks and reporting findings remotely. These competencies are crucial for identifying vulnerabilities, ensuring regulatory compliance, and protecting organizational assets in a distributed work environment.

Job description

ASMARK INSTITUTE

HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY

Are you the kind of technology leader people trust when the path forward is complex and the team needs both clarity and confidence? Do you stay steady under pressure, curious about what's next, and grounded in what actually helps the business? If you are a humbly confident technology leader who is strategic, practical, and trusted by both technical teams and business leaders, we want to talk to you!

Our ideal Head of Technology is:

  • Strategic and Steady: You think several steps ahead while staying grounded in what needs attention today. You know how to balance long-term vision with short-term priorities.
  • Humbly Confident: You lead with humility, self-awareness, and sound judgment. You are not afraid to say, "I don't know." You listen, seek to understand, and lead without ego.
  • Empowering and Accountable: You empower others, set clear expectations, and help technical leaders grow. You build a culture where people take ownership and do what they say they will do.
  • Technically Credible: You know your stuff, but you do not need to be the only expert in the room. You ask thoughtful questions, evaluate options, and earn trust from technical teams.
  • Future-Facing and Practical: You stay curious about what is coming next, including AI and emerging technology, without chasing every shiny object. You balance innovation with stability, security, and business value.
  • Clear and Collaborative: You bridge technical and business stakeholders. You communicate plainly so people can make informed decisions together.

Our ideal Head of Technology is energized by the opportunity to bring steady technology leadership to an organization that is ready to make clearer, more future-focused technology decisions. This leader will have the chance to build trust, strengthen collaboration, and help shape the technical path for where Asmark is going.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This role brings leadership, technical judgment, and future-focused discipline to how Asmark builds, modernizes, secures, and scales the technology behind its products and operations.

  • Build and lead a strong Technology function with clear standards, ownership, and accountability across engineering and technical teams
  • Own the technology roadmap so technical priorities support business goals, product direction, security, and long-term scalability
  • Lead modernization efforts that strengthen Asmark's systems, data, infrastructure, and development practices
  • Create technical discipline that helps engineering work move forward with quality, predictability, and clear priorities
  • Strengthen the partnership between Technology, Product, Operations, and leadership so business priorities become scalable technical solutions
  • Reduce cybersecurity, data, system reliability, and technical risks before they become business problems
  • Build practical technology rhythms that make capacity, system health, blockers, priorities, risks, and decisions visible to leadership
  • Lead and develop technical team members into strong owners, problem solvers, and future leaders
  • Use clear measures of technology success to connect system performance, engineering capacity, security, and business impact
  • Evaluate AI, automation, and emerging technologies with practical judgment so Asmark stays competitive and uses the right tools for where the business is going
  • Make smart technology decisions around vendors, resources, architecture, and capacity with a business-minded view of ROI and execution
  • Identify technical debt, capacity issues, and execution risks early, then create practical solutions that keep technology work moving

** This role is full-time and may be based onsite in Owensboro, KY, hybrid, or remote for the right candidate. Relocation assistance may be available for a candidate interested in joining the team in Owensboro. **

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience leading software engineering or application development teams through architecture, modernization, technical risk, and delivery decisions
  • Experience building and scaling a Technology or Engineering function through clearer structure, standards, priorities, accountability, and measurable execution
  • Strong business and technology judgment, with experience advising leaders on technical risk, investment priorities, scalability, security, and emerging technology

Preferred

  • Experience leading and scaling technical teams of roughly 5-25+ people, including employees, contractors, vendors, or technical leads
  • Leadership experience in a small to mid-sized organization
  • Experience in a regulated or operationally complex environment
  • Experience working with LMS, SaaS, or compliance-driven software platforms
  • Experience with AWS, JavaScript, React, Node.js, TypeScript, Next.js, CI/CD, or automated testing
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent technical experience

Desired
