Senior Systems Engineer (Windows)
Remote, USA
EMKS is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Independent Enterprise Testing Support Services (IETSS) contract. This project provides Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) services to support the product Software Delivery Life Cycle and Modernization efforts on behalf of our Veterans Affairs (VA) government client. In our continuing efforts to implement more of our IV&V activities, we are seeking a Sr. Windows Systems Engineer.
The Sr. Windows Systems Engineer is responsible for the administration, maintenance, support, and lifecycle management of Windows-based infrastructure supporting a large federal testing environment. This role provides Level 3 technical support for Windows servers, virtualization platforms, application hosting, and infrastructure services while collaborating with databases, Linux, network, and testing teams. The position supports a non-production environment consisting of system integration, functional, performance, and quality assurance testing systems. The administrator will be responsible for maintaining system reliability, supporting testing teams, troubleshooting complex issues, and participating in infrastructure modernization and automation initiatives.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Administer, maintain, and support Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025 environments, including Windows workstation environments as needed.
  • Build, configure, maintain, upgrade, migrate, and decommission Windows systems in accordance with established standards and operational requirements.
  • Maintain standardized system templates, configurations, file shares, Windows services, and related infrastructure documentation.
  • Provision, manage, and troubleshoot virtual machines and hosted services within VMware-based environments.
  • Monitor server capacity, disk space, memory, CPU, performance, and resource utilization to ensure systems remain available and responsive for testing activities.
  • Provide Level 3 troubleshooting for operating system, application hosting, service interruption, performance degradation, and infrastructure-related issues.
  • Support Windows-hosted testing tools and application environments, including installations, upgrades, configuration changes, access support, and issue resolution.
  • Support Broadcom development and testing environments, including installations, access management, and technical issue resolution.
  • Manage IIS and application certificates, including certificate deployment, renewal, lifecycle coordination, and troubleshooting using Venafi or similar certificate management tools.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve PowerShell scripts and automation solutions to streamline system administration and operational processes.
  • Respond to monitoring alerts, investigate outages or degraded services, participate in root cause analysis, and coordinate remediation with database, Linux, network, security, and application teams.
  • Support vulnerability remediation, operating system patching, security updates, BitLocker management, and compliance with organizational security requirements.
  • Support server access requests, permissions management, Active Directory groups, and local security groups.
  • Provide advanced technical support to testing personnel and cross-functional technical teams in a non-production federal testing environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to document technical issues, coordinate across teams, and communicate clearly with stakeholders.

Required Technical/Business Tools Experience:
  • Windows Server administration tools and environments, including Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025.
  • VMware or equivalent virtualization platform for provisioning, managing, and troubleshooting virtual machines.
  • Active Directory, group permissions, local security groups, and access management tools.
  • PowerShell or equivalent scripting/automation tools used to support system administration activities.
  • IIS and Windows-based application hosting environments.
  • Certificate management tools such as Venafi or equivalent platforms.
  • Monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting tools used to assess system health, performance, capacity, and availability.
  • Patch management, vulnerability remediation, and endpoint/security compliance tools.
  • Ticketing, service management, and change management tools used to document work, track incidents, and coordinate support activities.
  • Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint for documentation, collaboration, communication, and reporting.

Education/Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical, engineering, scientific, managerial, business, or related discipline; four years of equivalent documented experience or an Associate's Decree with two years of experience may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree.
  • Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate is desired.
  • VMware Certified Professional - Data Center Virtualization is desired.

Clearance:
  • U.S. Citizenship is required as is successfully passing a thorough Government background screening requiring the completion of detailed forms and fingerprinting.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain necessary security clearances as required for access to classified information.
