Duration: 10 weeks minimum

Location: Remote, with preference for someone located in Southeast Georgia

Stipend: We request that all candidates apply for outside funding or academic credit, if eligible

Established in October 2020, Sur Legal Collaborative is a new legal non-profit in Atlanta, GA working at the intersection of labor and immigrant rights. By collaborating directly with communities and grassroots groups, we seek to democratize legal knowledge and to provide legal support to movements fighting for economic, racial, and social justice in the Deep South.

Sur is pleased to announce a legal internship opportunity for Summer 2026. The position will provide the legal intern/extern with opportunities to gain experience in all aspects of the organization's work, with a focus on legal research, advocacy, and direct representation. The legal intern will work directly with Sur staff to fulfill its mission of working alongside immigrant and working-class communities to democratize legal knowledge on labor rights, building power and fostering cross-racial labor solidarity in the Deep South.

Our work includes:

  • Conducting Know Your Rights training and preparing Popular Education materials on worker rights in the workplace regardless of immigration status.
  • Providing legal representation to workers on labor complaints, deferred action, U visas and T visas
  • Providing tailored guidance to groups filing labor complaints to federal labor agencies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Wage and Hour Division, the National Labor Relations Board, and the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission or groups filing for labor-based immigration relief
  • Training providers & community groups on labor and immigration remedies available to workers who have experienced labor violations.
  • Providing rapid response assistance with workplace emergencies

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Interviewing immigrant and low wage workers for potential labor violations;
  • Drafting administrative labor complaints for submission to government agencies;
  • Researching and developing Know Your Rights materials on issues impacting worker safety, wages, and immigration status (this includes creating content for social media);
  • Conducting legal research on issues arising under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the National Labor Relations Act, Title VII and applicable federal and state labor laws;
  • Conducting research on issues impacting immigrant workers at the intersection of immigration and labor law;
  • Screening immigrant workers for potential immigration relief;
  • Assisting with immigration relief applications including deferred action, U and T visas;
  • Drafting Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and/or state or local government Open Records Act requests;
  • Assisting with drafting declarations, motions, briefs, and other legal documents;
  • Updating and maintaining client files using Sur's case management system.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Completion of a minimum of one year of law school;
  • Demonstrated interest in social justice work;
  • Cultural competency (experience working with low-income or vulnerable populations preferred) and/or relevant lived experience;
  • Spanish proficiency preferred;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Flexibility to pivot between different projects based on priority;
  • Ability to work remotely (access to laptop, WiFi, etc.) during all or part of EST regular workday
