Job description

Location: Fully Remote

Employment Type: Full-Time

Department: Tax

Reports To: Tax Director

About the Role

Profitwise Accounting is hiring a Tax Manager to lead and support our growing tax team. This is a senior-level, client-facing leadership role for an experienced tax professional who can manage complex client relationships, oversee tax return quality, support tax planning, mentor preparers, and help improve the way our tax department operates.

This role is ideal for someone who combines strong technical tax knowledge with leadership, communication, and operational follow-through. The Tax Manager serves as a senior tax advisor for clients, a coach for the tax team, and a key partner to leadership in keeping tax work accurate, timely, and aligned with Profitwise standards.

We are open to considering a Senior Tax Associate candidate, but our preferred hire is a Tax Manager who can provide team leadership, client relationship management, quality oversight, and tax department direction.

Key Responsibilities
Client Advisory and Relationship Management
  • Meet with tax clients and provide consultations, tax planning, and tax strategy recommendations.
  • Serve as a senior tax advisor for assigned clients.
  • Support high-net-worth clients with advanced tax planning considerations, including limitations, income reduction strategies, deduction maximization, and married filing separately analysis when advantageous.
  • Conduct client kick-off meetings, tax planning meetings, ongoing planning meetings, and complex consultations.
  • Respond to client and team communications within 24 hours.
  • Speak directly with confused, concerned, or unhappy clients to understand their concerns, explain tax rules or firm position, and develop a clear plan.
  • Ensure client needs are met with professionalism, accuracy, and care.
  • Assess whether a client is an ideal fit for the firm and discuss concerns with leadership as needed.
Tax Planning and Technical Oversight

  • Prepare and present initial tax plans for basic to intermediate clients.
  • Review tax projections and make planning recommendations regarding retirement contributions, including SEP, IRA, and related strategies.
  • Proactively alert the team to tax law changes that may affect clients.
  • Provide advanced guidance on complex tax matters and client-specific tax strategies.
  • Prepare complex tax returns as needed, with a primary focus on quality review and team development.
  • Review complex returns for accuracy, completeness, technical quality, and client impact.
  • Communicate or delegate issues related to UltraTax and other tax-related software.
  • Maintain strong technical awareness of tax rules, planning strategies, and tax compliance requirements.
Tax Team Leadership

  • Assign tax preparers to returns and monitor team workload.
  • Assist with tax return preparation when needed to support the team.
  • Meet individually with tax team members weekly or bi-weekly to discuss client work, resolve tax issues, and provide coaching.
  • Mentor tax team members and support progress toward performance and professional development goals.
  • Map out career paths for direct reports.
  • Support team members through recognition, encouragement, and practical development to increase retention and job satisfaction.
  • Lead tax team meetings, including weekly tax huddles, open office hours, and team education discussions.
  • Provide updates, facilitate discussion on complex tax issues, and recommend process improvements.
  • Run L10 Tax Meetings to provide tax team updates and discuss issues with leadership.
Quality Assurance and Workflow Management

  • Oversee quality assurance for tax-related client communication, including effectiveness, timeliness, and accuracy.
  • Review Qount projects weekly to ensure all tax projects are current, assigned, documented, and moving forward.
  • Prevent projects from becoming lost, stagnant, or unclear.
  • Review target hours versus actual hours and provide input on client pricing and budgets.
  • Participate in quarterly L10 planning meetings, including scheduling, meeting needs, resource planning, and team approach.
  • Anticipate client, project, team, or workflow issues and take steps to resolve them.
  • Discuss significant issues with the CEO or leadership team as needed.
  • Help innovate tax department processes and contribute to building Profitwise as a firm of the future.
Recruiting and Team Development

  • Interview prospective tax candidates.
  • Oversee testing of new prospective tax candidates.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and grade tax candidate assessments.
  • Provide feedback and follow-up to candidates.
  • Help evaluate technical ability, communication style, judgment, and fit for the tax team.
E-Filing and Compliance Oversight

  • Provide oversight for the e-filing process and ensure return rejections are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accountability for tax workflow completion, filing readiness, and timely resolution of filing issues.
Qualifications
Required
  • 15+ years of tax experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience in complex tax work and tax team leadership.
  • Enrolled Agent or Certified Public Accountant credential required.
  • Advanced experience with individual, business, and complex tax returns.
  • Strong knowledge of high-net-worth tax issues, tax planning strategies, deductions, limitations, and taxable income reduction strategies.
  • Experience conducting client tax meetings and consultations.
  • Experience reviewing tax returns and providing technical guidance to preparers.
  • Strong business acumen and client relationship management skills.
  • Ability to communicate tax rules clearly to clients and team members.
  • Ability to manage difficult client conversations professionally and constructively.
  • Comfortable working in a paperless, cloud-based environment.
  • Strong commitment to protecting client data and privacy.
  • Ability to respond to clients and team members within 24 hours.
  • Typing speed of approximately 50-60 WPM.
  • Proficiency with 10-key.
Preferred

  • Experience with UltraTax.
  • Experience with Qount or similar workflow/project management systems.
  • Experience with TaxPlan IQ or similar tax planning software.
  • Experience leading tax team meetings, huddles, or office hours.
  • Experience managing tax preparers or reviewing preparer work.
  • Experience developing candidate assessments or supporting tax hiring.
  • Experience reviewing target hours, budgets, pricing, and team capacity.
  • Experience supporting process improvement in a tax department.
What Success Looks Like

A successful Tax Manager will:

  • Meet bi-weekly with individual tax team members to train, support, and help resolve tax issues.
  • Meet with the full tax team weekly during tax season and semi-monthly during the off season to provide updates, discuss complex tax issues, and recommend process improvements.
  • Review Qount projects weekly to ensure projects are updated, assigned, documented, and moving through the workflow.
  • Participate in L10 meetings and report on tax client status, team member needs, workflow issues, and department innovation opportunities.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and effective communication with clients and team members.
  • Keep tax work moving while protecting quality, client experience, and team capacity.
  • Help develop tax team members through coaching, feedback, training, and career path conversations.
  • Identify client, technical, workflow, or firm-risk issues early and escalate or resolve appropriately.
What We're Looking For

We are looking for a Tax Manager who can think beyond return preparation. This person needs to understand the client relationship, the team workflow, the technical tax work, and the operational systems that keep the department healthy.

The strongest candidates will:

  • Lead with both technical expertise and practical judgment.
  • Communicate clearly with clients, preparers, leadership, and support team members.
  • Anticipate issues before they become urgent.
  • Keep tax projects organized and moving.
  • Coach team members without creating dependency.
  • Balance client service, tax accuracy, team capacity, and firm risk.
  • Improve processes rather than simply manage the current workload.
  • Stay steady during tax season and help the team do the same.
