Is AI replacing civil engineers?

AI is transforming aspects of civil engineering by automating tasks like data analysis, design optimization, and project management. However, the role of a structural engineer remains essential for overseeing projects, applying engineering judgment, and ensuring safety, as AI tools are used to support rather than replace human expertise. Civil engineers need to adapt by developing skills in digital tools and data analysis to stay relevant in an evolving industry.

Job description

At ANS, we’re not just a consulting engineering firm—we’re a team of trailblazers shaping the future of multi-disciplinary engineering. Recognized as one of the Best Places to Work and Top 10 Hottest Firm by Zweig Reports and featured in Inc. 5000’s Top 250 for our staggering 1,748% growth, we're proud of what we've built and where we're headed.
We're allergic to bureaucracy, thrive on innovation, and embrace data-driven decisions. If you love collaboration, creativity, and a fast-paced environment, we might just be your perfect match!

We are seeking a Mid-Level Structural Engineer with a specific focus on high-voltage substations and electrical infrastructure. This individual will be responsible for managing and executing structural scopes for substation projects from concept through IFC, including design of foundations for control enclosures, transformers, breakers, dead-ends, and other major HV equipment.

This role requires a strong familiarity with structural requirements unique to substations, including coordination with electrical teams, vendor specifications, foundation optimization, and document production aligned with milestone submittals. You'll play a key role in shaping and scaling our HV structural team and supporting utility and interconnection projects for renewable energy clients.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Structural Design & Engineering:
    • Perform structural calculations for tracker pile foundations, concrete pads, skids, and other site structures
    • Apply site-specific conditions (wind, seismic, snow, corrosion, frost) in structural analysis and design
    • Interpret geotechnical reports and apply parameters to foundation design assumptions
    • Support structural remediation recommendations based on pile load testing or field observations
    Drawing Production & Documentation:
    • Assist in preparing construction drawings and structural details using AutoCAD
    • Contribute to general notes, specification sections, and milestone submittals (30%, 60%, 90%, IFC)
    • Support development of signed/stamped structural calculation packages
    Field Coordination & Support:
    • Assist with site walkdowns, pile installation observation, and field data collection
    • Observe load testing programs and document structural performance
    • Coordinate with construction teams to evaluate as-built conditions and flag out-of-spec issues
    • Support field-based evaluations, remediation planning, and construction documentation
    • Provide photo logs, site sketches, and summary reports following field deployments
    Team Collaboration & Growth:
    • Coordinate with internal geotechnical and civil teams for integrated design
    • Attend internal design meetings and client calls as needed to stay aligned with project objectives
    • Receive mentorship from senior engineers with the opportunity to gradually take on more responsibility
    • Participate in internal learning, development, and project closeout reviews
Other Areas of Focus:
  • While the focus of this role is in renewable energy, you’ll also support general structural engineering work, including:
    • Analysis of structures for wind, snow, and seismic loads using ASCE 7 and IBC
    • Structural design for deep and shallow foundations (e.g., spread footings, piers, caissons)
    • Design and detailing of framing systems and structural components in steel, concrete, aluminum, FRP, and masonry
    • Structural condition assessments and live load evaluations
    • Coordination with manufacturers and development of foundation designs for prefabricated structures
    • Construction support including review of change orders, submittals, and field questions
Qualifications:
  • • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
    • EIT certification required, PE in progress preferred
    • 3–7 years of experience in structural design, with exposure to foundation engineering, energy, or infrastructure projects
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with structural software (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD) preferred
    • Working knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI standards
    • Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and willingness to learn
    • Willingness to travel (10–15%) for occasional site visits or field support
