What is a remote startup?

A remote startup is a newly established company where the founders and employees work from different locations, rather than from a central office. These startups leverage digital tools and online platforms to communicate, collaborate, and manage projects remotely. This model allows for greater flexibility, access to a global talent pool, and reduced operational costs. However, it also presents challenges in communication, team cohesion, and time zone coordination. Remote startups have become increasingly popular, especially in the tech industry, due to advancements in remote work technology.

What are remote jobs working for startups?

Remote startup jobs exist in various industries. The duties of these virtual positions vary but typically involve taking part in the development of processes, products, and services for a new business. Since these are virtual positions, you handle your responsibilities over the internet. As a software developer at a startup, you may code and test products or create internal programs that a startup can use on their computer network. As a graphic designer, you may create various images and visual elements for the website and/or product packaging. Startups also need remote business development specialists and accountants to create a development plan, make decisions, and handle the company’s finances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote startup founder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Startup Founder, you need strong entrepreneurial skills, business acumen, and a solid understanding of your industry, often supported by prior startup or leadership experience. Familiarity with project management tools (like Asana or Trello), remote collaboration platforms (such as Slack or Zoom), and basic financial or analytics software is critical. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, adaptability, and the ability to inspire and lead a distributed team are standout soft skills. These skills and qualifications are vital to successfully launch, manage, and scale a business in a remote environment where clear direction and effective collaboration are crucial.

What unique challenges might I face working for a remote startup, and how can I succeed in this environment?

Working for a remote startup often means adapting to a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment where clear communication and self-motivation are crucial. You may encounter challenges such as managing time across different time zones, handling ambiguity in your role, and building relationships with colleagues you rarely meet in person. To thrive, it's important to proactively communicate, embrace flexibility, and be willing to take initiative on projects. Additionally, leveraging digital collaboration tools and maintaining regular check-ins with your team can help you stay aligned and connected.

Job description

Account Executive
Upfluence | Remote | Full-time closing role
About the role
Upfluence is the influencer marketing platform that brands and agencies use to find creators, run campaigns, and pay talent, all in one place. As an Account Executive, you own the full sales conversation: you run live demos, you close, and you carry a number. This is a closing seat from day one, not a stepping-stone you wait years to reach.
We are building a team of people who already know how to compete and win. Maybe you have been booking meetings someone else gets to close and you are ready to own the deal yourself. Maybe you are a recent grad who is sharper than the job market has given you credit for. Maybe you are already a strong closer who wants a better product, a real ladder, and a ceiling set by your results instead of a pay band. If you win when something is measured, this is a seat where you get to prove it and get paid for it.
What you will do
  • Run up to six live demos a day, working daily fresh inbound leads plus opportunities you source through warm and social outreach. No cold dialing.
  • Own your pipeline and your quota: you carry a monthly and quarterly target, and your earnings are uncapped.
  • Become a genuine expert in influencer marketing and in how Upfluence solves real problems for brands and agencies.
  • Manage your pipeline and follow-up in Salesforce so nothing slips.
  • Bring the voice of the customer back to Product, Marketing, and Customer Success so the platform keeps getting better.
Who we are looking for
You do not need prior SaaS or formal sales experience. If you have it and you are good at it, even better. What you do need is evidence that you compete and win when something is measured. We care far more about what you have done than where you did it.
That evidence might be a sales or SDR role where you hit your number, a book of business you closed, a sport, a campus leadership role, or a side hustle with real figures behind it.
We are looking for someone who:
  • Has been measured on a goal and beaten it, and can tell us specifically how.
  • Communicates clearly, listens actively, then proposes solutions that add value, including over video, where most of your selling will happen.
  • Works with discipline and drive on their own: in a remote seat, you set the pace and own the follow-through.
  • Takes ownership: of the role, of the number, of getting better.
  • Stays resilient when the answer is no, and treats feedback as fuel rather than criticism.
  • Is genuinely curious about influencer marketing and wants to learn the space deeply.

If you were strong at a job that capped you, strong coming out of school and stuck in a market that has not matched you yet, or a proven closer looking for more room to run, we want to talk.
Compensation, level, and benefits
  • Base salary: starting at $58,000.
  • On-target earnings: starting at $100,000, uncapped, with per-module spiffs paid on top of commission.
  • Level and comp calibrated to you: we place you on the ladder based on what you bring. Proven closers can start above the entry band and higher on the ladder, so experience is rewarded, not flattened.
  • A clear path: a defined ladder from AE I to AE II to Senior AE to Assistant Director, with base increases as you grow inside your role, not only when you are promoted.
  • Fully remote: we are a distributed, international team, and you work from wherever you do your best work.
  • Extensive onboarding and training to support your transition into SaaS sales.
  • Stock options and employee perks.
  • Health: comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and disability coverage.
  • Time off: three weeks of paid vacation in your first year, plus company holidays.

The ceiling here is set by your results, not by a pay band or a queue ahead of you.
Equal opportunity
Upfluence is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate every applicant on merit and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or any other protected characteristic.
