What is a remote sports content writer?

Remote Sports Content Writers are professionals who create engaging articles, analysis, reports, and other content about sports while working from a location outside of a traditional office. They cover topics such as game recaps, athlete profiles, sports news, and opinion pieces, often for websites, blogs, or digital publications. These writers need strong writing skills, a passion for sports, and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. The remote aspect allows them to contribute from anywhere, using digital communication and collaboration tools.

How does a remote sports content writer typically collaborate with editors and other team members while working off-site?

As a Remote Sports Content Writer, you'll frequently use digital tools such as email, project management platforms, and video conferencing to stay connected with editors and fellow writers. Regular check-ins, editorial meetings, and feedback sessions are commonly scheduled to ensure consistency in voice, accuracy, and timely delivery of content. Clear communication and responsiveness are essential, as you'll often work independently but rely on collaborative input for brainstorming topics, editing drafts, and aligning on publishing deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote sports content writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Sports Content Writer, you need excellent writing ability, a deep understanding of sports, and experience with digital publishing platforms, often supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems like WordPress, SEO tools, and social media scheduling platforms is typically required. Strong research skills, adaptability, and the ability to meet deadlines set standout writers apart in this role. These skills ensure engaging, accurate, and timely content that attracts and retains a sports-focused audience in a competitive online environment.

Job description

Overview
Corporate Tools is hiring a Marketing Content Writer for $60,000/year. You will be a traditional company employee. This is a remote position, but if you're near one of our local offices, you're welcome to come hangout with us in-office as well. Our main offices are in Post Falls, ID, and Spokane, WA; we also have satellite offices in Austin, TX, and Salt Lake City, UT. You'll be working 40 hours a week and, of course, enjoy great company benefits.
Corporate Tools needs a Marketing Content Writer. With a need to describe what qualities our ideal candidate would possess, it's tempting to use balloon words like "dynamic," "creative," and all the other filler words you'll typically find in a writer wanted ad. But the writer we're looking for would instantly be irritated by that kind of descriptive nonsense. We need a writer who can write clear, concise sentences and treats ambiguity as if it were the plague. They would also have a strong sense of curiosity, and often find themselves asking why things work the way they do. They would also likely have a background in journalism or creative writing, however, we believe good things may come from surprising places, so we have no specific degree requirements.
In exchange for your skill and experience, we will provide a fun, relaxed, open-office setting; and empower you to have great influence over your own projects. Initially, there will be a learning curve, though. You will need to do a lot of research and writing to simply understand the services we market. Eventually, you will be expected to pitch, oversee and launch new websites and products. One of the best aspects of working at Corporate Tools is while we expect high-end copy, we also know it takes effort and time to produce good writing. While you will at times face deadlines and high-pressure situations, you will also be given the required time to experiment, learn and create the exact right page or post to complete your assignment.
Wage
$60,000 / year
Benefits
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental and vision for employees
  • Annual review with raise option
  • 22 days Paid Time Off accrued annually, and 4 holidays
    • After 3 years, PTO increases to 29 days. Employees transition to flexible time off after 5 years with the company-not accrued, not capped, take time off when you want
    • The 4 holidays are: New Year's Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Up to 6% company matching 401(k) with no vesting period
  • Quarterly allowance
    • Use to make your remote work set up more comfortable, for continuing education classes, a plant for your desk, coffee for your coworker, a massage for yourself... really, whatever
  • Open concept office with friendly coworkers
  • Creative environment where you can make a difference
  • No dumb benefits like free dog walking on the weekends that snobby hipster places have to make you feel cool, but mathematically won't cost the company much money because you won't use it
  • Trail Mix Bar - oh yeah

Responsibilities
  • Create compelling persuasive content on websites, blogs, and various social media outlets
  • Research markets and pitch content strategies for new and existing websites
  • Work with our team of writers and front-end designers to make high-end content

Requirements
  • A college degree
  • Experience writing online: blogs, websites, social media, etc.
  • Some experience pitching and placing content with third-party websites
  • Some experience working with a design team
  • The ability to handle criticism in a professional manner (aka: have a thick skin)
  • While definitely not mandatory, our most successful applicants, and now coworkers (with a few exceptions), have graduate degrees, usually MFAs in creative writing.
  • Experience working at an ad agency as a content writer
