What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Solar Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Solar Engineering Intern, you typically need a background in electrical or mechanical engineering, a solid grasp of renewable energy principles, and ongoing academic enrollment in a related field. Familiarity with solar design software (such as PVsyst or Helioscope), CAD tools, and basic project management platforms is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication set standout interns apart. These abilities are essential for contributing to technical projects, collaborating remotely with teams, and adapting quickly to the evolving solar industry.

What are some common challenges faced during a remote solar engineering internship, and how can they be addressed?

Remote solar engineering interns often encounter challenges such as limited hands-on access to physical equipment, time zone differences when collaborating with teams, and the need for effective communication in a virtual environment. To address these, interns should proactively seek virtual lab simulations, maintain regular check-ins with mentors, and utilize collaborative tools like video calls and shared documents. Building a consistent routine and asking for feedback can also help interns stay engaged and overcome remote-specific obstacles.

What is a Remote Solar Engineering Internship?

A Remote Solar Engineering Internship is a temporary, educational work opportunity where students or recent graduates gain practical experience in solar energy projects while working remotely. Interns typically assist with tasks such as designing solar power systems, analyzing data, conducting research, and supporting engineering teams from a distance. This internship allows participants to develop technical and professional skills in the renewable energy sector without needing to be on-site. It is ideal for those interested in solar technology, sustainability, and engineering careers. Remote internships also offer flexibility and the chance to work with companies or organizations located anywhere in the world.

What is the difference between Remote Solar Engineering Internship vs Remote Renewable Energy Project Coordinator?

AspectRemote Solar Engineering InternshipRemote Renewable Energy Project Coordinator
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of engineering, renewable energy, or related fieldsBachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, or project management
Work EnvironmentInternship, often collaborative, project-based, and educationalRemote coordination, stakeholder communication, project planning
Industry UsageEntry-level, focused on technical skills development in solar energyMid-level, managing renewable energy projects and teams

The Remote Solar Engineering Internship is an entry-level, technical role aimed at students or recent graduates gaining hands-on experience in solar energy design and analysis. In contrast, the Remote Renewable Energy Project Coordinator is a more advanced role focused on managing and coordinating renewable energy projects remotely. While both roles operate within the renewable energy industry, the internship emphasizes learning and technical skills, whereas the coordinator role involves project management and stakeholder communication.

Job description

About Us

Solar Landscape is the leading commercial rooftop solar developer in the U.S. Only 4% of commercial rooftops host solar today - we're changing that, fast. Commercial rooftop solar is the fastest, smartest way to build new clean power - delivering megawatts of generation in months, not years, and powering America's energy and future right where it's needed most. By turning rooftops into local power plants, we're reshaping how - and how fast - energy gets built in the U.S.

Recognized as the #1 Distributed Generation Developer by New Project Media, the #1 National Commercial Rooftop Solar Developer by Solar Power World, and winner of the U.S. Department of Energy's Grand Prize for Clean Energy, Solar Landscape is defining the future of energy generation in America.

Headquartered in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Solar Landscape has offices in Chicago, Baltimore, and New York City and operates in over a dozen states nationwide.

We move fast, solve hard problems, and take our work seriously - but never ourselves. We value clear thinking, accountability, and execution. At the same time, we're collaborative by default, and believe the best work happens when people enjoy working together. Our team is made up of smart, grounded people who show up for each other - whether that's troubleshooting a system design or catching up over lunch.

If you're looking to do meaningful work in a high-performance environment - and be part of the team reshaping how energy gets built in the U.S. - we'd love to meet you.

About The Role

We are seeking a Senior O&M Technician to join our growing team in Illinois. This is a hands-on, field-based role for an experienced solar professional who enjoys solving complex technical problems, taking ownership of system performance, and helping elevate the team around them.

As a Senior Technician, you will play a critical role in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing large-scale commercial rooftop solar assets. You'll act as a technical leader in the field-handling advanced diagnostics, supporting commissioning activities, and mentoring junior technicians-while working closely with Asset Management, Engineering, and Construction teams.  This role offers opportunities for growth as the O&M organization continues to scale.

Responsibilities
  • Lead inspections, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs across commercial rooftop solar systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex electrical, mechanical, and performance-related issues to maximize system uptime and energy production.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting on inverters, combiner boxes, monitoring systems, and balance-of-system components.
  • Capture and analyze thermal imagery during inspections and performance investigations.
  • Monitor system performance data and proactively identify optimization or corrective maintenance needs.
  • Support commissioning activities and ensure new assets meet Solar Landscape quality and performance standards.
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor for junior O&M technicians, supporting training and skill development.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate service records, including maintenance activities, repairs, findings, and system performance data.
  • Partner with internal teams (Asset Management, Engineering, EPC, and Safety) to resolve issues and improve long-term asset reliability.
  • Uphold all safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and best practices at all times.
  • Maintain tools, test equipment, and assigned work vehicle in safe, working condition.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade certification strongly preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience in solar O&M, electrical work, or related technical field.
  • Strong working knowledge of commercial PV systems, electrical theory, and safety standards.
  • Proven ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex system issues.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, multimeters, insulation resistance meters, and diagnostic equipment (IV Curve tracing preferred).
  • Comfortable working at heights and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally as needed.
$40 - $50 an hour
Salary will vary depending on your location and job-related skills and experience. This is an incentive-based position with the potential to earn more. For part-time roles, your compensation will be adjusted to reflect your hours.
Benefits and Perks

We offer competitive compensation and benefits designed to support you inside and outside of work:

       Training / Professional development opportunities
       401(k) with 4% company match
       Summer Fridays
       Flexible remote/hybrid work options
       Paid parental leave
Team lunches, events, and stocked kitchens
Modern, collaborative office spaces in Asbury Park, New York City, Boston, Chicago, and Baltimore
       Medical, dental, and vision coverage
Company-paid life and long-term disability insurance
