Remote Software Safety Engineer information

What is a remote software safety engineer?

A Remote Software Safety Engineer is a professional who works from a remote location to ensure that software systems, especially those used in safety-critical industries like automotive, aerospace, or healthcare, operate safely and reliably. Their responsibilities include identifying potential hazards, conducting risk assessments, developing safety requirements, and ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards. They collaborate with engineering teams, perform software verification and validation, and often use specialized tools to detect and mitigate software risks. Working remotely, they leverage digital communication and project management tools to stay connected and effective. This role is essential in preventing software failures that could lead to accidents or harm.

How does a remote software safety engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams while working offsite?

As a Remote Software Safety Engineer, collaboration with cross-functional teams such as hardware engineers, quality assurance, and project managers is mainly achieved through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and dedicated communication platforms. Frequent coordination is essential to review designs, discuss safety requirements, and address potential hazards in the software development process. Effective communication and proactive participation in team discussions help ensure that safety standards are maintained, even when working remotely. Many organizations also utilize agile methodologies to facilitate structured interactions and keep everyone aligned on project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software safety engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Safety Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or engineering, experience with safety-critical systems, and knowledge of relevant safety standards (such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508). Familiarity with safety analysis tools, version control systems, and requirements management software is typically required, along with certifications like Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE) being advantageous. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation skills are crucial for collaborating effectively and maintaining high standards while working remotely. These skills and qualifications ensure the development and maintenance of reliable, compliant, and secure software in environments where safety is paramount.

Our client offers a competitive package with a base salary, bonus, and full benefitsโ€”medical, dental, vision, PTO, etc.

The candidate should have a robust background in creating scalable, multi-tenant software systems focusing on real-time distributed technologies, preferably trading systems or other high-volume scalable applications. Applicants should be adept at enhancing system security and performance and managing high-volume API and web interfaces with stringent requirements for low response times. A proactive mindset toward creating modular, clean, and reusable code where commonplace solutions fall short is also required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and structural enhancement of scalable distributed computing systems.
  • Oversee and guide the architectural design and implementation of critical system components.
  • Optimize performance across various system layers for enhanced efficiency.
  • Creates efficient, reliable data storage solutions and implements robust communication mechanisms between services to ensure seamless data exchange and high system performance.

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering or another relevant discipline.

  • Extensive expertise in backend development, with a strong emphasis on database design, optimization, and management, as well as proficiency in interprocess communication techniques for distributed systems
  • 3 years of experience building event-driven systems leveraging RabbitMQ, SQS, Kafka, etc, to handle messages that arrive asynchronously and trigger appropriate actions.
  • Proficiency in gRPC alongside a grasp of cloud technologies.

Non-Technical:

  • Demonstrated capability in analytical and evaluative techniques.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with a keen ability to manage tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Independent initiative taker, skilled in problem-solving before escalation.
  • Ability to discern when collaborative input is necessary for optimal outcomes.
