Interns collaborate with engineering teams, contribute to real projects, and learn industry-standard tools and practices. This type of internship is ideal for individuals seeking flexibility and hands-on learning in software engineering without the need to relocate. Remote internships often include mentorship, code reviews, and opportunities to build a professional network. This position supports the creation and maintenance of geospatial products, geodatabases, and GIS applications while ensuring high-quality mapping and analytical support for Bureau of Reclamation programs.

This is a proposal position contingent upon contract award.

I've never heard of Terrestris. What do you do?

At Terrestris, we leverage technology to create better mission outcomes through better human performance. We form strong client and team relationships through transparency and strive to create an environment where our team can let their excellence shine through. By finding, developing, and incorporating new ideas, we provide memorable services. Rooted in the USMC values of honor, courage, and commitment, Terrestris seeks to deliver extraordinary value to the American people by helping the Government become more efficient and effective.

So, what will the GIS Specialist at Terrestris do?

The GIS Specialist will provide GIS technical expertise in support of Bureau of Reclamation programs by developing, maintaining, and analyzing geospatial data, maps, and GIS applications using ESRI technologies. The successful candidate will produce high-quality cartographic products, maintain enterprise geodatabases, develop automated GIS workflows, support ArcGIS Online, and provide technical assistance to Government personnel. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and experienced in GIS production, spatial analysis, and geospatial database management.

What does a typical day look like for the GIS Specialist?

You will:

  • Develop, edit, and maintain GIS maps, graphics, and tabular data products using ESRI software.
  • Create, update, and maintain enterprise geodatabases and other geospatial databases.
  • Perform spatial analysis and produce GIS deliverables that meet project objectives and customer requirements.
  • Assist with database design, GIS workflow automation, processing macros, and analytical procedures.
  • Develop and maintain automated geoprocessing tools using Python and ModelBuilder, as applicable.
  • Utilize ArcGIS Pro to create, edit, analyze, and manage geospatial datasets.
  • Support the administration and maintenance of ArcGIS Online content, web maps, applications, and workflows.
  • Review GIS products for technical accuracy, quality assurance, and compliance with Government standards and user requirements.
  • Maintain project documentation, logs, records, metadata, and GIS files.
  • Process and integrate data from multiple geospatial sources, including imagery, lidar, and tabular datasets, when applicable.
  • Collaborate with Bureau of Reclamation personnel to identify GIS requirements and recommend technical solutions.
  • Provide GIS technical assistance and support to Reclamation staff.
  • Maintain effective communication with project managers, technical teams, and Government stakeholders.
  • Perform other GIS-related duties as assigned in support of the contract.

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the professional we're looking for if you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Natural Resources Management, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of professional GIS production experience using ESRI software.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro and maintaining enterprise geodatabases.
  • Knowledge of GIS principles, cartography, spatial analysis, and geospatial data management.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

We are extra impressed by folks with:

  • ArcGIS Online administration and content management
  • Python scripting and geoprocessing automation
  • ModelBuilder
  • Lidar processing and mosaic datasets
  • Advanced cartographic design and map production
  • Prediction surfaces and spatial modeling
  • Database design and GIS workflow automation

Note: Any combination of three recent ESRI training courses (including ArcGIS Pro, Python Geoprocessing, Lidar/Mosaic Datasets, Map Design, Prediction Surfaces, ModelBuilder, or ArcGIS Online Content and Workflows) may substitute for a portion of the required experience.

Work Location

Remote work is available; however, remote employees must:

  • Reside within 50 miles of a Department of the Interior/Bureau of Reclamation Federal building located in one of the 17 designated Western U.S. states.
  • Be available to report onsite when requested for meetings, technical support, training, or other Government requirements.
  • Understand that remote work privileges are subject to Government approval and may be revoked at the Government's discretion.

Dedicated office space is available in Sacramento, California.
