What is a remote software developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

What does a remote software developer do?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving ability, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with common development tools (such as Git, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD platforms) and frameworks, as well as knowledge of cloud services, are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and stay productive in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, meeting deadlines, and contributing to distributed teams.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer

Location: Dallas, TX

Hybrid - In office 2-3 days a week, no exceptions.

Who We Are

Curbee is the fastest-growing mobile service technology provider. Curbee enables dealerships to offer mobile service with its platform called M.A.R.S. (Mobile and Remote Service). With Curbee., it's simple: dealerships send the right van to the right job, using the right route with the right parts, at the right time.

We're a scrappy, curious, resourceful team that's united by a "work hard, play hard" mentality. We connect in person often, transferring knowledge, building our culture and learning firsthand in market with our Dealer Partners. We've also been known to seek out the most killer chocolate chip cookies during our travels. At Curbee, everyone's an owner, with equity on the table for all. We also offer unlimited PTO, excellent insurance benefits, and a culture built on fun, innovation, and collaboration.

The Role

As a Senior Software Engineer at Curbee, you'll play a key role in shaping the future of automotive service. You won't just be building features; you'll help define what we build and how we build it.

We move fast, operate with high ownership, and push boundaries using AI to create exceptional products for our customers. At Curbee, engineers are Product Engineers, deeply connected to our users and responsible for driving meaningful outcomes, not just shipping code.

What You'll Do

  • Build the Future: Lead the design and development of core roadmap features, taking ideas from 0 to 1 and scaling them in production.
  • Collaborate & Create: Work closely with engineers, product managers, and designers to rapidly prototype, test, and iterate solutions to real customer problems.
  • Own the Stack: Architect, build, and operate systems using TypeScript, Node.js, and React within our serverless infrastructure, owning performance, reliability, and scalability in production.
  • Raise the Bar: Lead code reviews, mentor engineers, and continuously push the team toward higher standards in quality, speed, and execution.
  • Drive Technical Decisions: Make pragmatic architectural decisions, balancing speed and long-term scalability in a fast-moving environment.
  • Shape the Team: Contribute to a high-performance engineering culture, bringing ideas, challenging assumptions, and helping us improve every day.
  • Know Our Customer: Travel (~10%) to meet customers, gain firsthand insight into their workflows, and build solutions that solve real problems.

What We're Looking For

  • Technical Leadership: 5+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in JavaScript and strong experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and React.
  • Ownership Mindset: You take initiative, own problems end-to-end, and are comfortable operating with ambiguity.
  • Builder Mentality: You're energized by building from scratch, iterating quickly, and seeing your work in the hands of users.
  • Architectural Thinking: You can design scalable systems, while knowing when to prioritize speed and simplicity.
  • Problem Solver: You move quickly, break down complex problems, and deliver practical solutions without overengineering.
  • Customer-Driven: You care deeply about solving real customer problems and measure success by impact.
  • Full-Stack Expertise: Strong experience building and shipping modern web applications across the stack.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration: You raise the level of the team through clear communication, feedback, and leading by example.

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform and serverless architectures.
  • Experience in the automotive industry, especially dealer tools or Dealer Management Systems (DMS).
  • Experience at a startup or in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Loving chocolate chip cookies.

What You'll Get

  • $130,000 - $170,000 salary (depending on experience)
  • Equity ownership (because we're all in this together)
  • Comprehensive benefits with unlimited PTO

If you're highly motivated, love tackling big challenges, and want to build a future you can be proud of (while sneaking in a cookie or two), we'd love to chat.
