What is a remote software developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

What does a remote software developer do?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving ability, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with common development tools (such as Git, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD platforms) and frameworks, as well as knowledge of cloud services, are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and stay productive in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, meeting deadlines, and contributing to distributed teams.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

Our disciplined approach-grounded in dedicated talent, proactive planning, rigorous quality assurance, agile methodologies, cost-effective delivery, and uncompromising ethics-positions UnityTec as a trusted partner committed to achieving measurable, enduring results for our clients.
Job Overview
We are seeking a Senior AI Assisted Software Developer to join our team. You will drive the end-to-end development and modernization of enterprise web applications using .NET and React, while simultaneously pioneering the team's adoption of agentic AI coding tools like Claude and Cursor. By establishing robust AI workflows, building technical guardrails, and mentoring peers, you will empower the entire engineering organization to accelerate software delivery without sacrificing security or code quality. This is a hybrid position requiring 3 days a week in the office located in Mechanicsburg, PA.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Enterprise Full-Stack Engineering & Modernization
    • Application Development: Design, develop, test, and maintain robust enterprise web applications and services utilizing C#, ASP.NET Core, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, and T-SQL.
    • System Modernization: Drive the incremental migration of legacy applications to modern .NET and service-based architectures, responsibly utilizing agentic tooling to accelerate the transition.
    • Technical Operations & Architecture: Troubleshoot complex application, integration, database, and production issues while actively contributing to architectural documentation, technical decision records, and reusable implementation patterns.
  • Agentic AI Strategy & Infrastructure
    • AI Adoption Leadership: Champion the maturation of agentic development across the team, establishing precise methodologies for using platforms like Claude, Codex, and Cursor to deliver production-grade software in a controlled, spec-driven manner.
    • Tooling & Scaffolding Creation: Engineer the underlying infrastructure that makes AI-assisted development reliable and repeatable, including reusable skills, structured plans, custom rules, hooks, guardrails, and project-specific context boundaries to keep AI outputs safe and on-spec.
    • Research & Development: Continuously evaluate emerging agentic tools, models, and techniques, translating industry advancements into practical, actionable recommendations for workflow integration.
  • Quality Assurance, Standards, & Governance
    • Workflow Standardization: Define strict protocols and workflows for controlled code generation, ensuring optimal task scoping, context provision, convention enforcement, and output verification so the team achieves speed alongside uncompromising quality.
    • Code Review & Security Compliance: Conduct rigorous, meaningful code reviews for both human-authored and AI-generated code, establishing and enforcing high standards for code maintainability, security, and automated testing.
  • Mentorship, Evangelism, & Team Enablement
    • Technical Mentorship: Guide junior, mid-level, and senior developers through pair programming and hands-on coaching, focusing on both foundational software engineering principles and the disciplined application of agentic tools.
    • Knowledge Sharing & Evangelism: Serve as the definitive subject matter expert by running capability demonstrations, evangelizing best practices, and building an internal, easily accessible playbook of prompts, rules, and design patterns.
Required Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional software development experience, including delivering enterprise production applications.
  • Strong hands-on experience with C#, ASP.NET Core, RESTful APIs, and modern .NET application development.
  • Strong experience with relational databases, particularly SQL Server and T-SQL, including data modeling, query optimization, and transaction management.
  • Experience developing modern front-end applications using React and JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with agentic development platforms (Claude, Codex, Cursor, or similar) and a track record of using them to ship real, controlled, spec-driven code.
  • Demonstrated ability to go beyond basic prompting- building structured plans, reusable skills, custom rules and instructions, hooks, and guardrails that make agentic development reliable at scale.
  • Strong understanding of automated testing (unit, integration, and component-level) and how to keep AI-generated code within that safety net.
  • Experience with source control, pull requests, continuous integration, and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Ability to balance modern practices, including agentic workflows, with the practical realities of maintaining and incrementally modernizing legacy systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience building and maintaining reusable agentic assets, custom skills, agents, rules, hooks, slash commands, MCP integrations, or prompt/instruction libraries.
  • Experience defining team-wide standards or governance for AI-assisted development, including guardrails for security, IP, and code quality.
  • Experience with architectural and application patterns such as dependency injection, clean architecture, vertical slices, CQRS, or mediator-based application design.
  • Experience designing or developing distributed systems, microservices, or service-oriented applications, and with messaging technologies such as RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, Kafka, or NServiceBus.
  • Experience with Entity Framework Core or another object-relational mapping framework.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (Azure or AWS).
  • Experience running enablement, training, demos, lunch-and-learns, or internal communities of practice, around new tools and techniques.
  • Experience supporting systems in regulated, defense, logistics, financial, or audit-focused environments.
  • Experience working with Department of Defense systems, security requirements, or software development processes.
Clearance Requirements:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • A current DoD Secret clearance is highly desired.
