What is a remote software developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

What does a remote software developer do?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving ability, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with common development tools (such as Git, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD platforms) and frameworks, as well as knowledge of cloud services, are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and stay productive in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, meeting deadlines, and contributing to distributed teams.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

Division 8 Sales Engineer

LockNet

Nicholasville, KY • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Medical, Vision, Retirement, PTO

This job post has expired today. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

Since 1993, LockNet has been a family-owned and operated business enthusiastic about keeping people safe and secure by simplifying and supplying door and lock solutions. We put intentional focus on keeping a great culture as we continue to grow, because we appreciate our people. Learn more about our business at www.locknet.com/about-us.

LockNet is seeking a Sales Engineer - Construction to serve as the technical backbone of our commercial door and hardware solutions. Working closely with the sales team, you'll specialize in door and hardware specification, quoting, detailing, and review - making sure every customer's hardware needs are met and that projects satisfy applicable code requirements, including IBC, ADA, ANSI A117.1, and NFPA 80/101.

You'll partner closely with Project Managers to onboard customers and transition jobs for successful management. While Project Managers own ongoing timelines and execution, during onboarding or periods of high demand you may independently manage new customer jobs end-to-end. If you bring strong professional communication, sharp attention to detail, and the ability to juggle multiple projects with a sense of urgency, you'll thrive here.

Work Arrangement: This role can be performed on-site at our Nicholasville, KY headquarters, hybrid, or fully remote - depending on the candidate and business needs. Minimal travel to customer sites as required.

What You'll Do

  • Develop hardware sets and door & hardware specifications in coordination with the sales team.
  • Create take-offs for frames, doors, hardware, and Division 10 items, and handle quoting, detailing, costing, and specialty-item identification for construction projects.
  • Provide pricing during customer bid and RFP processes, and set customer-specific pricing based on margins established by the sales team.
  • Create AutoCAD drawings for submittals and project documentation, and manage submittal packages, substitution requests, and closeout documentation.
  • Review customer building plans to identify hardware requirements and ensure code compliance.
  • Set up and maintain item libraries in our Division 8 software (AVAware, Comsense, TOAD TopView, or similar) and create and manage orders in the internal job management system.
  • Collaborate with architects, general contractors, and construction managers to resolve specification questions and support project needs.
  • Provide technical support and training to Project Managers, and assist Purchasing with special-order items and new vendor identification and setup.
  • Help onboard and transition new accounts to Project Managers - and independently project-manage new jobs when capacity requires.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 3 years of commercial door & hardware experience.
  • Experience with AVAware, Comsense, TOAD TopView, or similar Division 8 software (required).
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes, including IBC, ADA, ANSI A117.1, and NFPA 80/101.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents, blueprints, and architectural drawings.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD preferred; proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
  • Two-year associate's degree or equivalent work experience required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Professional door & hardware certification (e.g., AHC / DHI) strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Procore or similar construction project management software a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

What Sets LockNet Apart as an Employer?

  • A zero-premium health insurance option for employees on our HSA plan (one of three health plans offered), with competitive rates for family coverage.
  • Free employee-only vision coverage.
  • 401(k) with employer match up to 5% (eligible after one year of service).
  • PTO that begins accruing on day one.
  • Autonomy and the ability to make a real impact.
  • An open and transparent culture where everyone has a voice.
  • A family-oriented business with great people, close relationships, and low turnover.
  • An industry leader and trendsetter - high-growth, technology-driven, and adaptive to change.

LockNet is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
