As a Software Engineer Senior within PNC's Technology organization, you will be based in Birmingham, AL.
Preferred- Core Mainframe Development Expertise
7+ years of hands-on experience developing, enhancing, and supporting IBM z/OS mainframe applications in large-scale, regulated enterprise environments.
Advanced proficiency in COBOL, JCL, and CICS, supporting both online transaction processing and complex batch workflows.
Strong experience with DB2 including complex SQL, schema design, performance tuning, and data integrity controls.
Proven ability to understand, refactor, and modernize large, complex legacy codebases while maintaining system stability and performance.
Enterprise Mainframe Tooling & Platforms
Deep experience with mainframe source control and deployment tooling used in enterprise financial institutions, including Endevor or successor platforms, and an understanding of enterprise promotion and audit controls.
Strong working knowledge of enterprise batch scheduling tools (e.g., CA-7, Control-M) and end-to-end batch dependency management.
Experience working within mainframe security frameworks, including ACF2 concepts, privileged access controls, and separation-of-duties requirements.
Production Support & Operational Excellence
Extensive experience supporting mission-critical production systems, including participation in on-call rotations, major incident response, and post-incident root cause analysis.
Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose and resolve issues using abends, dumps, logs, and tracing tools across CICS and batch environments.
Strong understanding of change management, release governance, and CAB-controlled environments within financial services.
Leadership, Design & Collaboration
Ability to serve as a technical leader for mainframe initiatives, providing design guidance, code reviews, and mentoring to less-experienced engineers.
Experience translating business and regulatory requirements into technical designs, with a focus on scalability, resiliency, and long-term maintainability.
Strong collaboration skills, working closely with product owners, business partners, QA, infrastructure, and operations teams in Agile or hybrid Agile delivery models.
Excellent documentation and communication skills, supporting knowledge transfer, operational readiness, and audit expectations.
