What Is the Job of Remote Software Developers?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

What is a Remote Software Developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

Senior Software Engineer

Senior Software Engineer (Backend / Platform)

Location: Fully Remote (U.S. only)
Compensation: $160,000 - $185,000 base + bonus

About the Company

We are a large, established media and technology organization undergoing a major platform transformation. The team is rebuilding mission-critical systems from legacy infrastructure into a modern, cloud-native, event-driven architecture that supports large-scale, real-time operations.

This is a high-impact opportunity to help shape the next generation of systems powering complex, high-volume business workflows at national scale.

Role Overview

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend expertise to help design and build scalable platform services.

This is a hands-on role focused on distributed systems, microservices, and cloud-native development. You'll work closely with a remote engineering team to modernize legacy systems, build new services, and integrate external platforms.

You'll also contribute to system design, mentor engineers, and help drive engineering best practices across the team.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build scalable APIs and microservices across core platform domains
  • Lead modernization efforts from legacy systems to cloud-native architectures
  • Build event-driven systems for real-time processing and system communication
  • Integrate third-party SaaS platforms and external systems
  • Architect distributed systems for scalability, reliability, and performance
  • Define API contracts using REST and/or GraphQL
  • Work with relational and NoSQL data stores
  • Deploy and manage services in AWS using containerized infrastructure
  • Improve system observability, monitoring, and performance
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team growth
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on product and technical direction

What We're Looking For

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience
  • Strong backend experience with Java (Spring Boot preferred) or similar
  • Deep understanding of microservices and distributed systems
  • Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka or similar)
  • Strong experience building scalable, high-performance systems
  • Hands-on experience with AWS (GCP or Azure also considered)
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Strong database experience (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, or NoSQL systems)
  • Solid understanding of API design, authentication, and system design
  • Experience with CI/CD and infrastructure as code (Terraform preferred)
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools (Datadog, Grafana, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills in a remote environment

Nice to Have

  • Experience with large-scale or enterprise platforms
  • Background in high-volume or transaction-heavy systems
  • Experience with legacy system modernization
  • Exposure to React or Vue
  • Experience with billing, inventory, or contract-based systems

Why Join

  • High-impact role tied to a large-scale platform transformation
  • Opportunity to build modern systems from the ground up
  • Strong ownership and influence on technical direction
  • Work on complex, real-world systems at scale
