Remote Software Developer Intern information

What is a remote software developer intern?

A Remote Software Developer Intern is a student or recent graduate who works from a remote location, typically from home, to gain practical experience in software development. Interns in this role assist with coding, debugging, testing, and other software engineering tasks under the guidance of experienced developers. The remote aspect allows interns to collaborate with team members virtually, using online communication and project management tools. This position helps interns build technical skills, learn industry practices, and prepare for a career in software development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer intern?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, familiarity with languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript, and current enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git), collaborative platforms (like GitHub or GitLab), and project management tools such as Jira or Trello is typically expected. Self-motivation, strong communication, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and learning. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to contribute effectively from a distance, adapt quickly to team workflows, and maximize their learning and productivity.

How do remote software developer interns typically collaborate with full-time engineers and other team members?

As a Remote Software Developer Intern, collaboration with full-time engineers and other team members is usually facilitated through digital communication platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom. Interns are often included in daily stand-up meetings, code reviews, and project planning sessions, which helps them stay connected with the team and understand project goals. Regular check-ins with mentors or supervisors are common, providing guidance, feedback, and opportunities for learning. While remote work can present challenges in building relationships, proactive communication and participation in virtual team activities help interns integrate smoothly and contribute effectively.

At BambooHR, we're all about setting people free to do great work, and we believe AI is a powerful partner in that mission. We're leaning into intelligent tools to streamline our workflows, giving us more time for high-impact innovation. We look for curious, forward-thinking people who are ready to explore how AI can elevate their work and help us reimagine the future of HR.

Essential Job Duties

Looking to work on an award-winning product with some of the best developers the market has to offer? Looking for a role where you can engineer and architect a product but still have a life outside of that? Well, keep reading. As a Principal Software Architect at BambooHR you will work with an exceptional team of talented individuals who live and breathe our Bamboo Values. You will help define BambooHR's technical strategy for intelligent product experiences. You will architect and guide the delivery of AI-powered capabilities that are secure, reliable, observable, and maintainable at scale, balancing modern AI capabilities with sound software engineering principles. Although writing code is part of this role, it goes beyond just that. You will have many additional responsibilities, listed below.

You will:

  • Build reliable AI systems in production, including prompt/version management, evaluation and regression testing, monitoring for drift/quality, and cost performance optimization
  • Establish responsible AI practices for the team (privacy, data handling, model risk, human-in-the-loop workflows), and contribute to patterns/standards that scale across services
  • Defining architectural changes that can be implemented incrementally, while minimizing risk
  • Defining advancements in architecture that roll the software in the right direction
  • Collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to determine architectural priorities
  • Building, fixing, and improving code, especially high-value code
  • Training team members on basic practices, new techniques, and past mistakes
  • Helping the team to be able to build code with confidence

What You Need to Get the Job Done

  • Bachelor's in technology-related field or equivalent certification in development
  • At least 10 years of engineering experience with at least 7 of those years having been in software architecture
  • Experience developing SaaS software utilizing various coding languages including React, PHP, MySQL, etc. and the ability to pick up new languages quickly
  • Experience with the full lifecycle of software development including the use of version control tools, build management, unit testing systems and API (paradigms)
  • Experience deploying solutions and provisioning environments with best-practice solutions
  • Experience with CI/CD and deployment systems
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to tactfully and effectively give and receive concrete feedback
  • Knowledgeable in security best practices, including OWASP Top 10
  • Familiarity with static analysis and code scanning
  • Experience delivering AI-backed features end-to-end in a production environment, including integration with LLM APIs or ML Services, and a track record of iterating based on evaluation data and user impact.
  • Ability to lead technically in ambiguous problem spaces - making sound tradeoffs, mentoring others on AI patterns, and raising the bar on code quality and operational excellence
