Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer information

What does a remote software defined radio engineer do?

A Remote Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer designs, develops, and maintains radio communication systems that are implemented through software rather than traditional hardware circuits. Working remotely, they use programming languages and signal processing techniques to create flexible and efficient radio solutions for applications such as telecommunications, defense, and research. Their responsibilities include developing algorithms, optimizing radio performance, troubleshooting signal issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, all while leveraging remote communication and development tools.

What is the difference between Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectRemote Software Defined Radio EngineerRF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Communications, or related fields; experience with SDR platformsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or related fields; certifications like FCC or RF-specific training
Work EnvironmentRemote or on-site, focused on software development and signal processingPrimarily on-site or lab-based, focused on hardware, testing, and RF system design
Industry UsageTelecommunications, defense, aerospace, software companiesWireless communications, broadcasting, defense, telecommunications

The Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer specializes in developing and implementing SDR systems through software, often working remotely. In contrast, the RF Engineer focuses on hardware design, testing, and deployment of RF systems. Both roles require technical expertise but differ mainly in their focus on software versus hardware components.

What are some typical challenges faced by remote software defined radio engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex signal processing tasks, ensuring reliable communication across distributed teams, and staying updated with evolving SDR technologies. Working remotely may also require effective collaboration using digital tools and clear documentation to align with colleagues on system design and troubleshooting. To overcome these challenges, SDR Engineers benefit from proactive communication, regular code reviews, and ongoing professional development through webinars and technical forums.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software defined radio engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Defined Radio Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, digital signal processing, and RF communications, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with SDR platforms (such as GNU Radio, USRP, or MATLAB), wireless protocols, and programming languages like Python or C++ is essential. Strong problem-solving, independent work ethic, and effective remote communication skills help set candidates apart. These abilities are crucial for designing, implementing, and troubleshooting complex radio systems in distributed and collaborative environments.

Job description

Engineer IIIย

US โ€“ Lehi, Utah (Remote-friendly)ย

RLDatix is on a mission to transform care delivery worldwide, ensuring every patient receives the safest, highest-quality care. Through our innovative Healthcare Operations Platform, we're connecting data to unlock trusted insights that enable improved decision-making and help deliver safer healthcare for all.ย

Job Descriptionย

RLDatix (RLD) is on a mission to help raise the standard of careโ€ฆeverywhere. Trusted by over 10,000 healthcare organizations around the world, our solutions help improve health and care. Our applications ensure that patients receive the best and safest care while supporting the providers who deliver it. Joining TeamRLD means being part of a global effort of over 2,000 team members in making a difference in healthcareโ€ฆevery day.ย

We're searching for a US-based Engineer III to join our OneSource product team, so that we can strengthen and evolve the platform that helps hospitals quickly find the manufacturer documentation they need โ€” including instructions for use, safety data sheets, and operating and service manuals. The Engineer III will own backend-heavy, full-stack development across a complex document-ingestion, metadata, search, and integrations platform โ€” translating a highly detailed, document-centric backend into a practical, equipment-centric search experience for healthcare users.ย

How You'll Spend Your Timeย

ย
  • Own backend-heavy, full-stack feature development across OneSource โ€” writing PHP application code, MySQL data work, API integrations, and targeted frontend fixes โ€” in order to deliver both new capabilities and technical maintenance in a roughly 50/50 balanceย

  • Trace behavior through a layered, framework-based application (October CMS on Laravel and Symfony) โ€” navigating event- and hook-driven workflows, indirect code paths, and rich data relationships โ€” in order to independently deliver features at the component levelย

  • Design and evolve search, integration, and API touchpoints (OpenSearch/ElasticSearch and third-party APIs) to keep the platform reliable and performant as data volumes and use cases growย

  • Diagnose and resolve moderately complex issues across the application, data layer, and automated deployment pipelines โ€” troubleshooting failures well enough to remediate or direct escalation appropriatelyย

  • Contribute to modernization initiatives as the roadmap matures โ€” including frontend modernization into a decoupled SPA architecture, Python-based AI pipelines and product integrations, and infrastructure evolution โ€” using AI development tools pragmatically while maintaining ownership of technical decisions and code qualityย

ย

What Kind of Things We're Most Interested in You Havingย

ย
  • 4โ€“6+ years of professional software development experience with strong PHP and MySQL capability (MySQL proficiency is essential โ€” candidates without it will struggle in this role)ย

  • Proven success working in layered MVC frameworks with complex, event- or hook-driven behavior (Laravel, Symfony, October CMS, or comparable framework-based applications โ€” not simply isolated scripts or lightweight SPAs)ย

  • In-depth knowledge on how to inherit and improve complex business applications โ€” untangling relational data models, workflow-heavy systems, integrations, search, and legacy-to-modernization effortsย

  • Cloud and infrastructure fluency, especially Kubernetes (the environment runs on Kubernetes in AWS, with infrastructure managed as code through Terraform in Git); comparable cloud experience beyond AWS is welcomeย

  • Practical Python experience supporting automation, AI, or backend services (dedicated AI specialization not required, but Python fluency is important)ย

  • Ability to commute to the Lehi office for occasional collaboration; travel expected 0โ€“5% for offsites, training, or planning sessionsย

  • Sincere interest in building software that directly improves patient safety, and comfort translating a complex internal data model into a simple external user experienceย

  • A knack for working self-directedly on a small, lean team โ€” reviewing documentation, asking targeted questions, and delivering without close handholdingย

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Docker, Terraform, OpenSearch/ElasticSearch, automated CI/CD, and AI integration or agent-building experience are strong pluses but not requiredย

ย

By enabling flexibility in how we work and prioritizing employee wellness, we empower our team to do and be their best.
