What is a remote software architect?

A Remote Software Architect is a professional who designs and oversees the technical structure of software systems while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. Their responsibilities include making high-level design choices, selecting appropriate technologies, and ensuring that the software meets both functional and non-functional requirements. They collaborate with development teams, stakeholders, and other architects, often using online communication and project management tools. Remote Software Architects play a crucial role in ensuring that software projects are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with business goals.

What does a remote software architect do?

The job duties of a remote software architect involve planning software and system development projects, defining standards, and working with IT professionals to make choices about platforms and design specifications, languages, and project management strategies. An architect’s responsibilities include overseeing the technical aspects of the development project. As you manage the effort to develop software applications, you may also be responsible for quality assurance and testing code to ensure that it meets specifications. Remote software architects use online communication and project management tools to collaborate with their team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Architect, you need deep expertise in software design, system architecture, and programming languages, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), architectural frameworks, and tools such as UML or version control systems is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect can be advantageous. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart, especially when collaborating across distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for designing scalable solutions, aligning technical and business goals, and ensuring effective coordination in a remote environment.

How does a remote software architect typically collaborate with distributed development teams?

Remote software architects regularly coordinate with globally distributed teams through video conferences, collaborative design tools, and detailed documentation. They often lead virtual architecture review sessions, provide technical guidance asynchronously, and facilitate decision-making across time zones. Clear communication and strong organizational skills are essential to ensure alignment on design principles and project goals. Many organizations use agile methodologies, which help structure regular check-ins and feedback loops, making remote collaboration more effective.

Job description

ImagineX is a tech company that deploys AI-assisted teams to build and secure mission-critical enterprise solutions with our clients – spanning software, data, and AI. Structured like a software company, not a traditional consultancy, we blend deep technical expertise with authentic values, achieving world-class satisfaction (NPS 91). Our dedicated teams specialize in software, data, and AI across the U.S. and LATAM, bridging the gap between boutique agility and enterprise scale.

We're looking for an Android Architect to join our growing team.  Our execution success is rooted in our unique model that is supported by our industry partners and specialists.  The ImagineX culture thrives on entrepreneurship, risk taking, mutual trust, teamwork, encouraging change, and letting our consultants own their way of working.
This is a remote role, no additional travel required, aggressive salary and bonus packages, and 401K matching.

Duties:

You will be responsible for designing scalable, modular application architectures; providing deep technical leadership in Kotlin, Jetpack libraries, and modern Android development patterns; and collaborating closely with backend, design, and AI teams to define system integrations, API contracts, and end‑to‑end technical solutions. This role leads daily mob‑programming or collaborative engineering sessions to drive clarity, alignment, and consistent implementation across the team, while also reviewing complex code for architectural integrity, performance, and maintainability. You'll partner directly with clients and stakeholders to translate business requirements into actionable engineering plans, prototypes new or AI‑driven features to validate feasibility, and oversees the evolution of large, enterprise‑level Android codebases to ensure long‑term reliability, scalability, and technical excellence.

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or similar
  • Extensive Kotlin expertise, including:
    • Deep understanding of coroutines, flows, structured concurrency, and asynchronous programming
    • Strong command of advanced Kotlin features (sealed classes, inline functions, extension functions, generics, DSL construction)
    • Experience architecting and maintaining large-scale Kotlin applications in production
    • Ability to write idiomatic, testable, maintainable Kotlin code following modern best practices
    • Familiarity with the broader Kotlin ecosystem (Ktor, Kotlinx libraries, Gradle Kotlin DSL, etc.)
  • Experience designing and working with scalable architectures, including distributed systems, high‑availability patterns, and performance‑oriented design
  • Interest or experience working at the forefront of AI, including integrating AI services, building AI‑driven features, or working alongside ML/AI engineering teams
  • Strong verbal communication skills, with the clarity and confidence to lead or actively drive daily mob‑programming sessions
  • Experience with modern IDEs, source control systems, and continuous integration pipelines
  • Comfortable working with large codebases and navigating complex, evolving architectures

This role is based in the US and only open to citizens and permanent residents of the US who do not require visa sponsorship.
