Remote Software Architect information

What is a remote software architect?

A Remote Software Architect is a professional who designs and oversees the technical structure of software systems while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. Their responsibilities include making high-level design choices, selecting appropriate technologies, and ensuring that the software meets both functional and non-functional requirements. They collaborate with development teams, stakeholders, and other architects, often using online communication and project management tools. Remote Software Architects play a crucial role in ensuring that software projects are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with business goals.

What does a remote software architect do?

The job duties of a remote software architect involve planning software and system development projects, defining standards, and working with IT professionals to make choices about platforms and design specifications, languages, and project management strategies. An architect’s responsibilities include overseeing the technical aspects of the development project. As you manage the effort to develop software applications, you may also be responsible for quality assurance and testing code to ensure that it meets specifications. Remote software architects use online communication and project management tools to collaborate with their team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Architect, you need deep expertise in software design, system architecture, and programming languages, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), architectural frameworks, and tools such as UML or version control systems is essential, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect can be advantageous. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart, especially when collaborating across distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for designing scalable solutions, aligning technical and business goals, and ensuring effective coordination in a remote environment.

How does a remote software architect typically collaborate with distributed development teams?

Remote software architects regularly coordinate with globally distributed teams through video conferences, collaborative design tools, and detailed documentation. They often lead virtual architecture review sessions, provide technical guidance asynchronously, and facilitate decision-making across time zones. Clear communication and strong organizational skills are essential to ensure alignment on design principles and project goals. Many organizations use agile methodologies, which help structure regular check-ins and feedback loops, making remote collaboration more effective.

What is the difference between Remote Software Architect vs Remote Software Developer?

AspectRemote Software ArchitectRemote Software Developer

The main difference is that Remote Software Architects focus on designing and planning software systems, requiring strategic and high-level skills, while Remote Software Developers primarily write and implement code. Both roles often work in tech environments, but Architects are more involved in system design and planning, whereas Developers focus on coding and feature development.

Is a remote software architect in demand?

Remote software architects are in high demand due to the increasing reliance on cloud computing, distributed teams, and digital transformation initiatives. They are expected to have strong technical skills, experience with architecture frameworks, and proficiency in tools like UML and cloud platforms, making their expertise valuable across various industries.

Is it possible to work remotely as a software architect?

Yes, remote work is common for software architects, who design and oversee software systems. Many companies offer remote positions that require strong communication skills, experience with collaboration tools, and expertise in system architecture. Remote roles often involve virtual meetings, cloud-based development environments, and flexible schedules.

Job description

About Upsun (formerly Platform.sh)

Upsun is the cloud application platform humans and robots love. It is built for today's hybrid teams, where AI agents write and test code and humans focus on solving the problems that really matter. Developers, DevOps engineers, and platform teams use Upsun to build, ship, and scale confidently without wrestling with backend infrastructure. We give you your time back. You get:

  • Predictable performance, even at scale
  • Secure, compliant environments by default
  • Real-time observability and profiling built in
  • Cloning, configuration, and provisioning in seconds
  • AI-ready features that plug directly into your stack

The name says it all. "Up" means uptime, reliability, and acceleration. "Sun" reflects our follow-the-sun-support, a 24x7, globally distributed support team keeping the lights on while you rest. Our core belief is that software should power brighter solutions and greater innovation.

Upsunners are a remote, global workforce, and we thrive in a multicultural team. We are committed to open source and an open, welcoming environment. Our team spans the globe and the experience spectrum.

What's our commonality, our cultural fabric? A curious spirit and a thirst for knowledge; an eagerness for innovative ideas and cultures. We believe we can build anything together in an environment that frees you to do your best work.

Our values:

We make a positive impact.

We aim for the stars.

We care for each other.

Impact of a Senior Solutions Architect

As a Senior Solutions Architect, AI- Native SDLC, you will make Upsun Dispatch real inside our most important customers. AI helped engineers ship more code - it didn't help teams ship more product. Upsun Dispatch closes that gap, built on the idea that the workflow is the primitive, not the agent. Your job is to understand how customers ship today, design workflows and architecture that fit their environment rather than an idealized one, and prove it with working implementations.

You own the technical relationship across the full arc, before signature and after it. The model isn't the hard part, and neither is our platform - the hard part is the customer's reality: their branching strategy, their review culture, their security reviewers, the twelve-year-old monolith nobody wants to touch, and the unwritten rules about who is allowed to approve what. A generic platform doesn't survive contact with that. You understand it deeply enough to design something that fits, and you're technical enough to prove it rather than describe it.

This is a founding role in a young product line. The architecture you design in one account becomes the pattern we ship to every account. Early on, you'll be close to the first deployments, because that's where the learning is; as our delivery capability builds out, your weight shifts further toward the front of the cycle and toward the patterns that let others deploy.

What to expect
  • Win the Technical Decision: Own the technical relationship on your opportunities - discovery, architecture and security review, proofs of value, and the conversation where an engineering leader decides whether to trust us.

  • Grow the Accounts You Own: Expand from the first workflow to the second and third, inside both new logos and our existing customer base.

  • Build the First Working Version: Build workflows, custom steps, and integrations yourself against each customer's GitHub or GitLab, Jira or Linear, Slack, and existing CI.

  • Drive the Market Feedback Loop: Be the shortest path between a customer's problem and our roadmap - translating customer signal into structured input for product and engineering.

  • Make the Next Deployment Cheaper: Capture each deployment as a reusable pattern - a reference architecture, a workflow template, a documented approach that partners and other architects can run without you.

  • Technical Leadership: Handle security questionnaires, architecture reviews, compliance questions, and RFP inputs; deliver technical workshops and executive briefings tailored to the audience in the room.

What you bring
  • Foundational Solutions Architecture: 7+ years in technical roles, with substantial time in customer-facing architecture - solutions architecture, principal or lead pre-sales engineering, technical consulting, professional services, or founding engineer work with design partners.

  • Hands-on Technical Depth: You still code every now and then. You can be dropped into an unfamiliar codebase and CI setup and be useful within a few days, building your own proofs. Comfortable in at least one ecosystem our customers live in: PHP and Symfony, JavaScript and TypeScript, Python, or Go.

  • Modern SDLC Fluency: Real fluency in Git workflows, CI/CD, testing strategy, code review practice, release management, and how all of it breaks at scale.

  • Cloud & Infrastructure Competence: Containers, environments, secrets handling, cloud primitives, and the realities of running things in production.

  • AI-Native Expertise: You've built with agents, not just used them - multi-step agentic workflows, tool and MCP integration, context engineering, evaluating and steering model output, cost and latency tradeoffs. Working understanding of governance, audit, and cost control in agentic systems.

  • Value Selling Fundamentals: Strong ability to anchor technical conversations in business outcomes, and to tell an engineering leader what works, what doesn't, and where the field is going - without selling.

  • Executive Presence: You're good in the room - able to sit with a VP of Engineering, a security reviewer, and a finance stakeholder, hold all three concerns, and tell a customer "that won't work" while keeping the relationship.

  • Strong Written Communication: Architecture documents, runbooks, and briefs that change decisions - what you write travels further than what you say.

  • Comfort with Ambiguity: The product is young and the category is being written now. You'll build the first version of things and revise them, working across time zones where needed (our product/engineering teams and many customers are in Europe).
