Full Stack Developer (USA, Remote)

Soulside AI

San Francisco, CA • On-site, Remote

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision

Job description

About Soulside
Soulside AI is transforming how behavioral health organizations operate, unlocking massive efficiency gains through AI. Our platform cuts documentation time by 80%-turning 3+ hours of daily paperwork into 30 minutes-so these organizations can focus resources on patient care, growth, and innovation. The impact is immediate: better outcomes, reduced costs, and the ability to serve more patients without adding administrative overhead.
We're scaling fast and building the infrastructure that will power mental healthcare for decades. This is your chance to join as an early engineer and shape a platform that every behavioral health organization will depend on. You'll build technology that directly improves millions of lives while capturing an enormous market opportunity. The timing is perfect, the problem is real, and the upside is massive.
Why this role matters:
  • Own features end-to-end-from the React interfaces clinicians touch every day to the distributed backend services that process sensitive healthcare data.
  • Work directly with founders on architecture decisions that will scale with our growth.
  • Build across the full stack: high-fidelity UIs with React & TypeScript, and distributed systems using Spring Boot & Kafka.
  • Ship technology that directly reduces clinician burnout and expands access to quality mental health care.

Our momentum speaks for itself:
• Backed by Counterpart Ventures, GreyMatter Capital, Sarah Smith Fund & Kaya Ventures • UCSF Rosenman Healthtech Innovator 2024 • OneMind Accelerator 2024 & PeakXV Spark Program • Global Top 10 - Confluent Data Streaming Challenge
The Role
We're seeking a Full Stack Developer to join our core team as we build technology that transforms behavioral health care. As one of our early engineering hires, you'll have outsized impact on our product, technical architecture, and company culture.
You'll build responsive, high-performance web applications with React and TypeScript, and you'll design the backend services-running on Spring Boot and event-streaming platforms-that power our AI-driven platform behind them. This role spans the whole stack: you'll translate multifaceted clinical requirements into clean UIs and well-structured, scalable backend logic, and you'll own major features from architecture through deployment.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the technical foundation of a company that's revolutionizing mental health care, with meaningful equity upside and the autonomy to make decisions that scale with our growth. This is a remote role open to candidates based in the United States.
What You'll Do
  • Full-Stack Feature Development: Build and maintain responsive, high-fidelity web applications using React and TypeScript, backed by core services written in Spring Boot.
  • Backend & Distributed Systems: Architect and develop backend services that process sensitive healthcare data, leveraging message queues and streaming platforms (SQS, Kafka, Kinesis) for high-volume asynchronous workloads.
  • Complex Data Implementation: Design and implement the technical logic and schemas that power the platform, translating multifaceted domain requirements into structured, scalable configurations across the frontend and backend.
  • LLM Integration: Design and optimize LLM pipelines, including prompt engineering, usage monitoring, and quality assurance to validate structured AI outputs.
  • Reliability & Observability: Implement monitoring, alerting, and observability (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana), along with data reliability patterns such as redundancy, retries, and graceful failure handling.
  • Security & Compliance: Apply security best practices using Spring Security, implement RBAC, and help ensure HIPAA compliance for clinical data.
  • Platform Reliability: Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve bugs and support issues across the stack to ensure a seamless experience for clinicians.
  • Foundational Decisions: Make technical decisions-and build the internal tooling and workflows-that will scale as we grow from ten clinics to ten thousand.
  • Collaboration: Work directly with founders and clinical teams to translate healthcare needs into scalable technical solutions.
Who You Are
  • End-to-End Owner: You're comfortable moving between pixel-level UI polish and backend architecture, and you own features from design through production.
  • Detail-Obsessed: You have an eagle eye for precision-you notice the small inconsistencies others miss, whether in UI alignment or data structures.
  • Systems Thinker: You reason naturally about distributed systems, failure modes, and data consistency. You design for what goes wrong, not just what goes right.
  • Problem Solver: You're resourceful and can find smart technical solutions when faced with complex, non-standard requirements or scaling challenges.
  • Ownership Mindset: You're happy to roll up your sleeves for both high-level feature work and the critical "last-mile" details that make a production system successful.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of software engineering experience building production applications.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript, with hands-on experience building interfaces in React.
  • Experience managing complex application state and data flows on the frontend.
  • Familiarity with modern CSS frameworks (Tailwind, etc.) and responsive design.
  • Solid backend experience with Java and the Spring Boot framework for building production-grade services.
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and integrating frontend and backend systems.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and message queues / streaming platforms (SQS, Kafka, or Kinesis).
  • Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred-EC2, ECS/EKS, auto-scaling).
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, remote startup environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with both technical and non-technical team members.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Bonus Points
  • LLM Proficiency: Hands-on experience with prompt engineering to refine and validate structured AI outputs, plus usage monitoring and quality metrics.
  • Observability: Experience with monitoring and alerting tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Security & Compliance: Experience with Spring Security, RBAC, and healthcare compliance standards (HIPAA).
  • Reliability Patterns: Experience with redundancy, circuit breakers, retries, and graceful failure handling.
  • Architecture: Event-driven architectures, microservices patterns, or Domain-Driven Design (DDD).
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, or experience with additional cloud platforms (GCP, Azure).
  • Performance Optimization: Proven ability to improve speed and efficiency in data-intensive applications.
  • Internal Tooling: A track record of building admin dashboards or automation scripts to simplify manual engineering tasks.
  • Healthcare technology background, audio/signal processing, real-time systems, or open source contributions.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary commensurate with the role.
  • Meaningful equity package with high upside potential as an early team member.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Flexible work arrangements with a remote-first culture (USA-based).
  • Direct access to founders and influence on company direction.
  • Professional development budget and conference attendance.
  • Modern tech stack and autonomy over technical decisions.
  • Opportunity to help build something meaningful that impacts mental health at scale.
How to Apply
Send us your resume along with a brief note about what excites you about this role and any relevant projects you've worked on. We'd particularly love to hear about full-stack features you've owned end-to-end, and any work you've done with distributed systems, React applications, or LLMs and AI systems in production.
