Remote Sensing and GIS Analyst roles share overlapping skills in spatial data and GIS tools, but Remote Sensing emphasizes satellite and aerial image analysis, while GIS Analysts focus on managing and analyzing geographic data for mapping and decision-making.
Remote sensing is the process of using satellite, sonar, and aerial imagery to gather information about an area. Remote sensing is often used to collect information on the spread of forest fires, track weather formations, and map the bottom of the ocean. In most time-sensitive cases, sensors are attached to a drone or airplane so they can collect data and add it to the Geospatial Information System (GIS). For businesses, remote sensing is typically used for land surveying, commercial and economic planning, early warning systems, and air traffic control. Remote sensing information is also available through public programs like Google Earth which allow researchers and companies to analyze information without having to collect it themselves.

If you love using innovative technology to tackle tough science problems and working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team environment, keep reading to learn more about the Strayos Applied Scientist internship opportunity.
Here at Strayos, we use advanced computer vision and machine learning on images and machine sensors data to build insights for Mining, Infrastructure and Construction industry. Our applied science team uses these datasets to better understand our customers critical business operations and how it is changing. We are seeking three exceptional students with experience interpreting and processing imagery to join our applied science team during a three-month internship based at Strayos' headquarters in Buffalo, WNY.
Over the course of this internship, you will work directly with our dynamic team of applied scientists who can share their deep knowledge of machine learning, remote sensing, geoscience, and physics. As an intern, you will learn how to implement novel, cutting-edge remote sensing and machine learning techniques to solve challenging research questions. To efficiently execute your solutions, you will access the Strayos' imagery archive and cloud-computing resources, and receive mentorship from one of our applied scientists. At the end of the internship, you will present your findings to the broader applied science team and learn more about future career opportunities at Strayos.
Responsibilities
Leverage our Python-based platform to query, access, and manipulate aerial imagery
Utilize machine learning or other classification techniques to analyze aerial imagery
Produce clear, concise results (e.g. ML models, statistics) for a project that can be completed during the course of the internship
Requirements
Candidates must currently be enrolled in an academic degree program in Geography, Geoscience, Earth Science, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or a related field, within 1 year of completion.
Experience with Python & Numpy
Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
Excellent written and verbal communication
Ability to work independently
Preferred skills
Experience with machine learning and image classification
Proficiency with the following Python packages: numpy, scikit-learn, keras
Experience working with aerial or satellite imagery and geospatial data.
