How much do remote sensing scientist jobs pay per year?
What is a remote sensing scientist?
What does a remote sensing scientist do?
Remote sensing scientists analyze data using sensors to solve problems related to local issues like urban planning to global complications like natural resource management. As a remote sensing scientist, your responsibilities include using statistical analysis or image analysis software to analyze data acquired by aircraft, satellites, and other platforms. You monitor atmospheric changes, better understand geospatial information, and even help influence decision making regarding fair and equitable land use. Remote sensing scientists are closely involved in innumerable fields.

What are some typical challenges remote sensing scientists face when working with large datasets?
What is the difference between Remote Sensing Scientist vs GIS Analyst?
| Aspect | Remote Sensing Scientist | GIS Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's/Master's in Remote Sensing, Geospatial Science, or related fields | Bachelor's/Master's in Geography, GIS, or related fields |
| Work Environment | Research labs, government agencies, environmental firms | Urban planning, environmental consulting, government agencies |
| Industry Usage | Satellite data analysis, environmental monitoring | Mapping, spatial data analysis, infrastructure planning |
| Common Search Intent | Remote sensing data interpretation, satellite imagery analysis | GIS mapping, spatial data management |
While both roles involve geospatial data, Remote Sensing Scientists focus on analyzing satellite and aerial imagery to monitor environmental changes, whereas GIS Analysts primarily work with geographic information systems to create maps and analyze spatial data for planning and decision-making.

Job description
GHGSat offers greenhouse gas detection, measurement, and monitoring services to industrial and government customers around the world. We use our own satellites and aircraft sensors, combined with third-party data, to help industrial emitters better understand, control, and reduce their emissions.
Our capability is unique: we provide high-resolution, local measurements of atmospheric methane and carbon dioxide concentration from remote sensors, enabling precise detection, visualization, and quantification of greenhouse gas emissions.
We are looking for an innovative Full Stack Web Developer for our Electric-Eye team working a web application enabling the processing and visualization of remote sensing data. As part of a cross-functional Agile Scrum team, you will design, develop, test, deploy, and support our post-processing software. You should be comfortable around both frontend and backend coding languages, development frameworks and third-party libraries. Overall, you have an excellent knowledge of web technologies, security standards and best practices, along with a strong motivation in tackling the important environmental issues that our planet faces today.
Responsibilities:
- Develop tools and application features to improve the workflow of processing emission-related data
- Evaluate, integrate and support frontend and backend services, databases, data transformation frameworks, and APIs
- Take ownership of the implementation of new features throughout their lifecycle from wireframes and system requirements through testing, implementation and support
- Optimize data structures, schemas and queries for performance and scalability
- Collaborate regularly with the team to design and evolve system architecture
- Maintain and ensure high availability of the data processing platform
- Liaise with developers, designers, QA and product stakeholders to identify new features
- NOTE: This role requires participation in a shared on call rotation with other members of the team.

- Competence with databases (PostgreSQL, NoSQL)
- Experience using software development tools such as Git version control and Docker
- Experience designing and implementing services in a cloud-native environment (AWS)
- Ability to independently deliver well-defined features with minimal supervision
- Availability to participate in a scheduled on-call rotation and provide occasional support outside regular business hours, including weekends, to ensure operational continuity.
Assets
- Experience with web-based geospatial visualization tools (OpenLayers, WebGL)
- Experience working with geospatial and remote sensing data formats (e.g., GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, raster/vector data)
- Interest in scientific analysis, atmospheric sciences, remote sensing and space technology
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering
- 2+ years of experience in relevant roles
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada and must meet the requirements of the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP)
