Remote Security Architect information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote security architect?

A Remote Security Architect needs deep expertise in cybersecurity principles, risk assessment, network security, and cloud security, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field and relevant certifications like CISSP or CISM. Familiarity with security frameworks, tools such as firewalls, SIEM systems, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help in designing robust security solutions and collaborating across remote teams. These skills are crucial for protecting organizational assets, ensuring regulatory compliance, and adapting to evolving cyber threats in distributed work environments.

How does a remote security architect typically collaborate with distributed teams to ensure effective security implementation?

As a Remote Security Architect, collaboration with distributed development, operations, and IT teams is primarily facilitated through virtual communication tools and regular video meetings. You will often lead security reviews, provide guidance on secure design patterns, and participate in incident response planning across different time zones. Building strong documentation practices and maintaining open communication channels are essential for aligning security strategies with business objectives. This role requires adaptability and proactive engagement to ensure all team members are aware of security best practices and compliance requirements, even when working remotely.

Job description

Posting Open Date: July 27th, 2026

Anticipated Posting Close Date*: September  30th, 2026

*Job posting may close early due to the volume of applicants.

Senior Data Security Architect

As the Senior Data Security Architect, you will be Fastly's technical authority on protecting sensitive data across our corporate and production systems. Your goal is to translate our data governance requirements into technical controls that are built directly into the systems and pipelines that touch our most sensitive data. You'll partner with Product, Engineering, Legal, and System Owners (e.g. IT, Analytics, Business Systems, Finance) across Fastly to design and implement tooling to enforce our data requirements and meet our regulatory and customer data obligations. Fastly believes that protecting the data entrusted to us is everyone's responsibility, and you'll give the rest of the organization the tools and technical guidance to live up to that.

You will be supported by a friendly security team, where you can learn and develop. We check our egos at the door. You'll make sure our customers benefit from a service built to the highest security standards in the industry. We pride ourselves in our involvement in the larger security community and encourage our team to present at network and security conferences and participate in the open source community. We are a distributed security team with the commitment and tools in place to make it work.

What You'll Do:

  • Define and drive technical security strategy across key data domains including data security, metadata management, data architecture, and data quality, as well as securing data across the entirety of its lifecycle
  • Embed data security into system design and adoption, partnering with Product, Engineering, Business Systems, Finance, and IT to ensure new products, technologies, and workflows are implemented securely from the outset
  • Identify, implement, and own the tooling that protects sensitive data at an enterprise level, including data discovery and inventory, and data loss prevention (DLP)
  • Harden and configure corporate systems across IT, Analytics, and Business Systems platforms to reduce the risk of overly permissive access and poor data quality
  • Assess and mitigate data-related risks in close partnership with the system and data owners who run Fastly's corporate platforms
  • Serve as the technical bridge between Fastly's data governance and privacy policies and the engineering reality of enforcing them at scale
  • Continuously improve data security posture by evaluating emerging threats, technologies, and architectural patterns

What We're Looking For:

  • 8+ years of experience in security engineering, data security, or data architecture, with a track record of owning enterprise-scale data protection work end-to-end
  • Hands-on experience implementing and running data discovery/classification, DLP, or comparable data protection tooling
  • Experience partnering across Legal/Privacy, Product, and Engineering to turn policy and regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, DPIAs) into technical controls, particularly within a technology company and preferably in the cloud or SaaS space
  • Strong grounding in system and data architecture, data modeling, and the secure handling of data across its lifecycle
  • Demonstrated ability to design and influence security architecture at scale, balancing risk, usability, and business velocity
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of building buy-in across technical and non-technical stakeholders alike
  • Strong systems thinking and the ability to operate across ambiguity, scale, and organizational boundaries

Work Hours: This position will require you to be available during core business hours.

Work Location(s) & Travel Requirements: This position is open to Hybrid And Remote Work Locations.

The preferred locations for this position are:

  • San Francisco, CA
  • New York, NY
  • Denver, CO

There is a strong preference for Hybrid near a local office.  However, we may be willing to consider remote candidates within the US.

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

SF / LA Fair Chance Ordinance Statement
