Position Overview
AKIVA is seeking a senior engineer with strong computer science and data engineering depth to lead development, maintenance, and enhancement of safety analytics and database tools for the FAA Air Traffic Organization. You will work across SQL and noSQL databases, web applications, and analytical workflows that power Safety Risk Management, Top Safety Priorities, and the Safety Management Tracking System (SMTS). The role is hands-on technical and policy-aware: it suits a senior software engineer or data engineer who is comfortable producing safety-grade code, dashboards, and reports that brief FAA executives.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, test, and maintain reporting capabilities for FAA safety databases and tools, including the Safety Management Tracking System (SMTS), the Independent Safety Assessment Information System, the In-Service Review Checklist Tool, and the Systematic Air Traffic Operations Research Initiative (SATORI) playback system
Build and maintain databases and tools related to requirements, evidence, findings, corrective actions, and priorities using SQL (Oracle, SQL Server), noSQL, Microsoft Access, ColdFusion, Java, Python, C++, and Bootstrap
Implement access protections for external organizations to maintain audit data with appropriate access permissions
Retrieve, transform, and convert documentation between source systems and required formats (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, PDF)
Perform quantitative analysis for risk estimates, including data identification, data merging, preprocessing, statistical modeling, supervised learning (classification, regression), unsupervised learning (clustering, anomaly detection), and collision risk analysis
Support the Barrier Analysis Review process, including report development and qualitative analysis
Develop and validate code and testing software, including machine-learning and statistical models; verify fulfillment of requirements, suitability/effectiveness, data integrity, and accuracy of analyses
Build and maintain dashboards, web content, and graphical analytics that present safety information to FAA executives
Maintain, develop, and propose enhancements for SMTS, including system administration, data migration from legacy systems, and streamlined data-entry business processes
Develop, test, implement, and maintain SATORI playback capabilities supporting litigation, search and rescue, training, quality assurance, pilot inquiries, and trend analysis
Apply ATO Common Taxonomy to existing Safety Risk Management efforts in SMTS and analyze SMTS data to identify trends and tracking issues
Ensure all deliverables are Section 508 compliant
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field
8+ years of professional experience in software engineering or data engineering
5+ years building and maintaining production database and analytics applications, including hands-on SQL development on Oracle and/or SQL Server
Demonstrated experience with Python (data analysis, machine learning) and Java
Demonstrated experience with statistical modeling, supervised and unsupervised learning, and applied data visualization
Experience integrating, migrating, and reconciling data across legacy and modern systems
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to engage directly with technical and policy stakeholders
Ability to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential
Must be authorized to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Operations Research, or related discipline
AWS, Azure, or GCP certifications; Snowflake, Databricks, or comparable platform credentials
Prior FAA Air Traffic Organization or aviation-safety analytics experience
Familiarity with SMTS, IIS, ICT, and SATORI
Experience with ColdFusion and C++ in legacy government systems
Section 508 Trusted Tester certification
Familiarity with AI-assisted code generation, data-validation, and anomaly-detection tools
