What does a remote scrum master do?

The job duties of a remote Scrum master involve overseeing the implementation of the Scrum project management framework. Scrum is a subset of the Agile framework and involves strategies to help organize and manage tasks for software development and other computer or IT projects. As a work from home Scrum master, your responsibilities mainly include planning sprints, which are smaller projects or tasks that help the team meet benchmarks for the whole project. You work remotely to assist with benchmark planning and ensure that team members have the resources and skills to complete their assigned tasks.

How to become a scrum master who works remotely?

To become a scrum master who works remotely, you need to have numerous qualifications, including education, certification, professional experience, and management tools and skills. A bachelor’s degree in computer science is often necessary, although engineering degrees are also useful. The scrum master has more project management responsibilities, but you still need to have solid programming skills. Multiple professional organizations offer certifications to become a scrum master. The certification process includes attending a training course, completing an exam, and paying a registration fee. Because you work from home, you need excellent time management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Scrum Master?

Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills help a Scrum Master inspire and coordinate distributed teams. These abilities are crucial to ensure transparency, foster team cohesion, and drive successful project delivery in a remote environment.

How does a remote scrum master effectively facilitate communication and collaboration within a distributed Agile team?

Job description

Be Part Of A Dynamic Team

Join a growing organization strengthening how technology initiatives are planned, governed, and delivered across the enterprise. The technology organization is building a more structured Project Management Office designed to improve project visibility, accountability, prioritization, and execution while maintaining the flexibility required in a fast-moving environment.

This Project Manager will join a small, collaborative PMO and initially support a major enterprise systems initiative before taking ownership of additional technology integrations and high-priority projects. The environment is well suited to a practical project leader who communicates openly, surfaces risks early, and keeps teams focused on measurable business outcomes.

What's In Store For You

  • Remote opportunity for candidates residing in an approved U.S. hiring state.
  • Contract-to-hire opportunity with the intention of building a long-term internal PMO team.
  • Join a newly developing PMO with an opportunity to help establish effective delivery practices.
  • Work across enterprise technology initiatives without being restricted to one application or technical specialty.
  • Gain exposure to high-priority systems migrations, integrations, and business transformation initiatives.
  • Partner directly with business leaders, IT teams, vendors, and executive stakeholders.

How You Will Make An Impact

  • Independently manage multiple IT and enterprise projects from initiation through delivery.
  • Initially support a major HR technology migration and integration initiative before assuming ownership of subsequent project phases and system integrations.
  • Build and maintain project schedules, milestones, RAID logs, status reporting, stakeholder communications, and delivery documentation.
  • Facilitate planning sessions, project meetings, stakeholder discussions, and delivery reviews.
  • Identify risks, delays, dependencies, and resource constraints early rather than waiting until project deadlines are threatened.
  • Provide clear and transparent project reporting to both delivery teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Hold teams accountable for milestones while maintaining a collaborative working environment.
  • Challenge unrealistic timelines or assumptions constructively when project conditions require it.
  • Apply Agile/Scrum practices where appropriate while remaining flexible enough to support Waterfall or Hybrid delivery.
  • Coordinate business stakeholders, technology teams, vendors, and implementation partners.
  • Support the continued development of consistent PMO governance, reporting, and project-delivery practices.
  • Transition over time into additional high-priority technology and business initiatives across the enterprise.

Are you an experienced IT Project Manager ready to make an impact?

  • Bring approximately 3–6 years of hands-on IT or enterprise technology project management experience.
  • Demonstrate successful ownership of technology implementations, integrations, migrations, software projects, digital transformation, or comparable enterprise initiatives.
  • Have experience taking projects from planning through execution and delivery.
  • Show strong judgment around project risks, dependencies, escalation, and milestone management.
  • Communicate effectively with both senior leadership and hands-on delivery teams.
  • Be comfortable providing transparent updates when projects are at risk or off track.
  • Have experience working within Agile/Scrum environments, along with familiarity with Waterfall or Hybrid delivery.
  • Be capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously with limited oversight.
  • Bring experience with project-management tools such as Smartsheet, Jira, Azure DevOps, Microsoft Project, ClickUp, Planner, monday.com, or comparable platforms.
  • Demonstrate a collaborative but confident communication style and the ability to push back professionally when necessary.
  • Vendor-management or organizational change-management experience is beneficial.
  • Scrum Master, PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, or related project-management certification is preferred but not required.
  • Deep expertise in HRIS or any other specific enterprise application is not required
