What is a remote scientist?

A Remote Scientist is a professional who conducts scientific research, analysis, and experiments while working remotely, often using digital tools and virtual collaboration platforms. They may work in various fields, including environmental science, data science, biotechnology, and engineering. Remote Scientists communicate their findings through reports, presentations, or virtual meetings with colleagues and stakeholders. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, self-discipline, and proficiency in using remote research tools.

What does a remote scientist do?

A typical day for a Remote Scientist often involves analyzing datasets, designing experiments or simulations, collaborating with team members via video calls or shared digital platforms, and preparing reports or presentations. Depending on their specialization, they may spend time running remote experiments, writing scientific papers, or contributing to grant proposals. While much of the work is independent, regular virtual meetings are held to ensure alignment with projects and to discuss research progress. This structure allows Remote Scientists to balance focused research time with teamwork and ongoing professional development.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote scientist?

To thrive as a Remote Scientist, you need a strong grounding in scientific research methods, data analysis, and a relevant advanced degree such as a Master's or Ph.D. Tools like statistical software (e.g., R, Python), laboratory management systems, and secure data-sharing platforms are frequently used, along with certifications in specialized areas if required. Exceptional written and verbal communication, self-motivation, and organizational skills are essential for effectively collaborating within remote teams and managing independent projects. These abilities ensure remote scientists maintain high research standards, deliver impactful findings, and successfully bridge the gap between virtual collaboration and tangible scientific progress.

Is 40 too late to become a remote scientist?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a remote scientist, as the field values skills, experience, and education. Many scientists transition careers or pursue advanced degrees later in life, and remote work often requires strong communication and technical skills that can be developed at any age.

What remote scientist jobs are there?

Remote scientist jobs include roles such as research scientists, data scientists, laboratory scientists, and environmental scientists. These positions often require specialized knowledge, relevant degrees, and skills in data analysis, laboratory techniques, or scientific research, and may involve collaboration through digital tools and virtual meetings.

Data Scientist
The Opportunity:
As a data scientist, you're excited at the prospect of unlocking the secrets held by a data set, and you're fascinated by the possibilities presented by machine learning and artificial intelligence. In an increasingly connected world, massive amounts of structured and unstructured data open new opportunities. As a data scientist at Booz Allen, you can help turn these complex data sets into useful information to solve global challenges. We need you to help find the answers in the data.
On our team, you'll use your analytical skills and data science knowledge to create real-world impact. You'll work closely with your clients to understand their questions and needs, and then dig into their data-rich environments to find the pieces of their information puzzle. You'll develop algorithms and systems and use the right combination of tools and frameworks to turn sets of disparate data points into objective answers to help clients make informed decisions. Ultimately, you'll provide a deep understanding of the data, what it all means, and how it can be used.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience with programming languages including R, Python, or C
  • Experience designing, developing, or leveraging relational databases (RDBMS) such as PostgreSQL or MS SQL
  • Experience creating software for retrieving, parsing and processing structured and unstructured data, and developing scalable ETL/ELT workflows for reporting and analytics
  • Experience programming and coding mathematical models
  • Experience with data visualization tools and best practices
  • Knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle, testing, and version control
  • Ability to cleanse data and develop scripts and programs for converting various types of data into usable formats
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team, prioritize multiple work tasks, deliver products on time within and to quality standards
  • TS/SCI clearance
  • Bachelor's degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience supporting DoD organizations
  • Experience using and deploying machine learning algorithms, including natural language processing (NLP)
  • Experience with web development frameworks, including Shiny, Django, or Flask
  • Experience with data lakes, data warehouses, or data lake houses
  • Experience with cloud services, including AWS or Azure
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment collaborating with Application Developers, Infrastructure Engineers, and stakeholders
  • Experience with CI/CD, including Git, Jenkins, and Docker
  • Experience with distributed data and computing tools such as Spark, Databricks, Hadoop, Hive, AWS EMR, or Kafka
  • Experience with NoSQL implementation using MongoDB or Cassandra
  • Experience with data warehousing, including AWS Redshift, MySQL, or Snowflake

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance is required.
