Compensation:

Pay Transparency: The anticipated pay for new hires entering as a Supervisor-Application Development is between $115,000 - 144,000. The full pay range for this role is $115,000 to $173,000.  Pay is based on non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to work experience, education, location, licensure requirements, proficiency and qualifications, and company tenure & equity. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan based on company performance and individual performance.

Candidates without team leadership experience, large-scale application design and development expertise, project management experience, and a strong background in modern application development practices may be less competitive for this role.

Supervisor - Application Development Overview

This role is responsible for managing an application development team, including staffing, work assignments, performance management, and employee development. The supervisor will also develop and prioritize project plans and requirements, ensuring that all application development complies with IT policies, security, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Duties:

  • Establishes and maintains communications and working relationships with management in other departments across the enterprise
  • Provides design input and implementation supervision on complex software development projects
  • Provides guidance to staff regarding work procedures, code reviews, unit tests, security scans, work priorities, special requests and various technical issues from customers 
  • Manages moderate to large sized projects, including those involving multiple technologies and complex business functionality, and implications for the business and/or the IT architecture 
  • Transfers system knowledge to junior team members and provides coaching and tips for continued growth in order to take on more advanced tasks
  • Leads team in collaboration on projects and customer issue resolution
  • Determines work requirements, priorities, and best use of resources for planned and ad hoc projects
  • Performs administrative duties of enterprise applications and systems
  • Architects, develops and tests new applications
  • Monitors and measures individual performance and provides employees feedback and training to close gaps in performance
  • Mentors staff for continued growth of employee skills
  • Holds regular meetings with direct reports to discuss progress toward goals and review performance
  • Evaluates each goal, behavior, and skill set
  • Participates in the hiring of new employees
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of advanced IT application development principles and practices for object-oriented programming, client server, web, and service-oriented architecture
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills including the ability to address a wide range of audiences
  • Understanding of complex automated systems and project management life cycle practices and tools for both Agile and Waterfall methodologies
  • Ability to effectively prioritize resources to meet the needs of customers
  • Ability to multi-task and work within time constraints
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to assist and guide others
  • Ability to supervise staff using appropriate tools and techniques
  • Ability to establish priorities, make sound decisions and take action as needed
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to identify trends, question discrepancies and make recommendations
  • Relationship management skills and a highly collaborative workstyle
  • Excellent detail orientation, highly organized and able to prioritize work

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree. May substitute equivalent work experience or demonstrated competency for education
  • Experience as a Team Lead on an Application Development Team
  • 7+ years IT experience, with 5 of those years focusing on building large scale application development and application system design
  • Experience managing customer requirements or demands
  • Or, equivalent military experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with a MBA or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Background in insurance or financial industry.  Experience with Life and Disability, Dental and/or medical insurance industry, business process, and products is very valuable
  • Previous experience with Benefit Administration Systems, Source Control, Automation Tools and existing knowledge of USAble   applications 
  • Previous Supervisor experience of an application development team or Team Lead experience and formal leadership training
  • While candidates in the Eastern or Central Standard Time zones are preferred, applicants from other time zones are encouraged to apply.

Working Conditions (Physical Demands):

  • Travel required 20% of the time (weekend/nights may be required to support projects)
  • Normal, no adverse or hazardous conditions
