What is a Remote SaaS Developer?

A Remote SaaS Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building, maintaining, and improving Software as a Service (SaaS) applications while working from a remote location. They focus on cloud-based solutions that are delivered to users over the internet, handling tasks like backend and frontend development, API integration, and ensuring scalability and security. Remote SaaS Developers use tools for collaboration, version control, and deployment to work effectively with distributed teams. Their work enables clients and users to access software without installing it locally, often through a subscription model.

How do remote SaaS developers typically collaborate with product and design teams to deliver features efficiently?

Remote SaaS developers frequently work closely with product managers and designers through virtual meetings, collaborative tools like Jira or Trello, and version control platforms such as GitHub. Regular stand-ups, sprint planning sessions, and asynchronous communication help keep everyone aligned despite differing time zones. Clear documentation, proactive communication, and a willingness to provide and receive feedback are key to ensuring new features are delivered on time and meet quality standards. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of team cohesion even when working remotely.

Job description

CTO / Engineering Leadership -- Vertical SaaS (Talent Community)

Remote | United States

Let's Start the Conversation

Our portfolio is growing continuously, with over 100 companies across healthcare, financial services, government, education, transportation, media, energy, manufacturing, and more. That growth creates new engineering leadership opportunities on a regular basis.

We are always interested in connecting with exceptional engineering leaders in vertical SaaS. The kind of technologists who lead with AI-first conviction, drive transformation ahead of pressure, and want to build something that lasts. If that sounds like you, we would love to get to know you now, with the future in mind.

The Opportunity

As a senior engineering leader, you would join one of our portfolio companies directly, working alongside the leadership team as a core member of the operating company, often reporting directly to the CEO. You will own the full technology strategy, engineering organization, and platform architecture for a vertical SaaS business that serves a specific industry with mission-critical software. Customers depend on the product daily and rarely leave. The platform has to be reliable, the data has to be an asset, and the opportunity to create competitive distance through AI is real.

The title and scope will depend on the company and context, but the mandate stays the same: own the technical foundation, lead the shift to AI-native engineering, and build a technology organization that scales without losing the agility to rewire when the market demands it.

Who Your Are

You are the kind of engineering leader who is energized by the full picture: the architecture, the team, the product, and the business impact of getting all three right. You picked a vertical SaaS company, or something close to it, because you want to build software that runs something real for the people who depend on it. You are still close enough to the code and infrastructure to know when something is off, and you have already changed how your team builds and delivers software with AI. You see AI not just as an engineering accelerant but as a way to fundamentally reshape what your product can do for customers, unlocking value from proprietary data and deep workflow integration that generic models cannot replicate. You have led a meaningful technical transformation (a replatforming, an AI integration, a product repositioning) and what you remember most is not the technical milestone but the moment the business started moving differently because of it.

Qualifications for Success:

  • Led an engineering organization through a major platform transition (replatforming, modernization, cloud migration, or acquisition integration) while maintaining delivery throughput.
  • Shipped AI-embedded product capabilities with measurable customer outcomes, or led sustained AI experimentation with clear conviction about where it creates durable value.
  • Owned a SaaS platform's security posture and compliance requirements (SOC 2, industry-specific standards) without relying on a dedicated security team.
  • Designed or redesigned a data architecture that serves analytics, BI, and AI as a unified asset.
  • Built and scaled an engineering team, including hiring technical talent, developing engineers into leaders, and managing performance directly.
  • Served as a CEO's or GM's primary technology partner, representing the technical vision in executive, board, or customer conversations.
  • Made architecture and infrastructure investment decisions with direct commercial rationale (tied to retention, revenue, or competitive positioning).
  • Identified a commercial or product opportunity from a technical vantage point that others in the organization may have not seen.
Why a Banyan Operating Company

A permanent home, not a portfolio play. We buy, hold, and grow software companies for life. We don't resell. In a market where agentic AI is restructuring vertical SaaS right now, permanence is not permission to wait. It is the freedom to move faster: invest in bold platform modernization and AI-first transformation, and make the technical decisions that PE-backed companies on a three-to-five-year clock cannot afford to make.

Autonomy with backing. Stack choices, team structure, delivery practices, AI strategy. These are yours. We operate with a collaborative, decentralized culture where the entrepreneurial spirit of each company stays intact. We provide capital, shared services, and a network of operating partners. We do not tell you how to run your engineering org.

A personal approach. Banyan operates like a family office, not a financial sponsor. We care about the companies we acquire, the people who built them, and the teams who run them. You will work with people who understand vertical market software and respect what makes each business unique.

Legacy and continuity. We preserve the brand, the identity, and the culture of the companies we acquire. The employees and customers who depend on the platform are part of why we invested in the first place. You are building on a foundation that will be protected, not consolidated or stripped for parts.

A peer network. A community of portfolio company technology leaders navigating the same challenges: modernization, AI adoption, scaling engineering teams, and building on acquired codebases. You are not solving these problems alone.

What Happens Next

This is a talent community, for ongoing and future opportunities in our portfolio not an active requisition. If your background aligns with what we are looking for, one of our Executive Talent Acquisition Partners will reach out to introduce themselves and start the conversation. From there, the goal is to build a relationship so that when the right opportunity opens in our portfolio, we are ready to move quickly, together.

If you see yourself in this description and are energized by the idea of owning the technical foundation of a vertical SaaS business with real autonomy, permanent backing, and the time to build something that lasts, we want to hear from you.
