Remote Rpg Programmers focus specifically on scripting and developing mechanics for RPG games, requiring specialized knowledge of RPG systems. Remote Game Developers have a broader role, encompassing various game genres and development tasks. While both roles require programming skills, the RPG Programmer role is more niche, often working within teams dedicated to RPG titles.

What are some unique challenges faced by Remote RPG Programmers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Remote RPG Programmers often work with designers, artists, and other developers who may be located in different time zones, which can make real-time communication and collaboration challenging. Effective use of project management tools, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings are essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on game features and technical requirements. Additionally, maintaining code consistency and integrating various modules smoothly require strong version control practices. Being proactive in communication and adaptable to different workflows helps overcome these challenges and ensures successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, you need strong proficiency in RPG (Report Program Generator) language, experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or programming. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer, CL programming, and database management systems such as DB2 is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving ability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially for remote work environments. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of business-critical applications while enabling collaboration and independence in a distributed team.

What are Remote RPG Programmers?

Remote RPG Programmers are software developers who specialize in using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, typically for IBM i (AS/400) systems, and perform their work from a remote location rather than an onsite office. Their responsibilities often include developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with teams via digital communication tools. Working remotely allows these professionals to serve clients or employers worldwide, providing flexibility while leveraging their expertise in legacy and modern RPG codebases.

What Does a Remote RPG Programmer Do?

A remote RPG programmer works in software development, creating new applications or tools using the report program generator language, which was originally designed for the IBM minicomputer system on the AS/400 and i-Series of computers. RPG is one of the most frequently used programming languages, and significant amounts of business enterprise, infrastructure operations, and other essential system controls use it. As a remote RPG programmer, you work from home as part of a larger team of developers, building web and windows applications. Your duties and responsibilities include scripting tests, checking code, and building out programs.

About WEX and the AI Platform Team:

At WEX, we're transforming how businesses operate by embedding advanced AI into our global payments and mobility platforms. The AI Platform Engineering team enables product development groups across WEX to build, deploy, and scale AI-powered experiences quickly and safely. We're cloud-first, automation-driven, and focused on building reliable, secure, and scalable platforms that make AI a core part of our products. If you're excited by LLMs, Agentic AI systems, MLOps, and modern DevOps practices-and you thrive in fast-moving teams where innovation meets real-world impact-this role is for you.

Role Overview:

As a Sr. Software Engineer - AI Platform, you will be a hands-on engineer responsible for building and operating the cloud and DevOps foundations of WEX's AI platform. You will own CI/CD workflows, GitOps practices, and infrastructure automation across AWS and Azure, while also contributing Agentic AI Platform services and tools that power AI workloads.

You will work closely with other AI platform engineers, product teams, and data/ML engineers to ensure that AI-native applications are secure, observable, and easy to deploy and operate at scale.

How You'll Make an Impact:
  • Design, implement, and maintain cloud-native infrastructure for AI and LLM-based applications on AWS and Azure, including networking, compute, IAM, and observability.

  • Build and manage CI/CD and GitOps workflows using tools such as Fabric, Argo CD, and related DevOps tooling to enable reliable, automated deployments.

  • Develop production-grade services, utilities, and platform components in Python, including APIs, and automation scripts that support AI workloads.

  • Implement and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) for repeatable environments and services (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools).

  • Collaborate with AI/ML engineers and product engineering teams to integrate LLMs and agentic AI capabilities into WEX's products using secure, scalable patterns.

  • Operates as a system administrator-level engineer for key cloud services (logging, monitoring, secrets, container orchestration, storage, and security controls).

  • Champion AI-native development practices by using and promoting tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and other AI-assisted IDEs to increase velocity and code quality.

  • Contribute to and refine platform standards for security, compliance, observability, and resiliency across AI services and pipelines.

  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response for AI platform components, driving root-cause analysis and continuous improvement.

Experience You'll Bring:
  • 7+ years of professional software engineering or DevOps/SRE experience, with at least 3+ years working in cloud-native, production environments.

  • Strong experience with DevOps and GitOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and environment promotion workflows.

  • Hands-on experience with Fabric and Argo CD (or similar GitOps tools) for deployment automation and environment management.

  • Deep, system-administrator-level experience with AWS (preferred) and practical experience with Azure services (compute, networking, IAM, logging, containers).

  • Proficiency in Python, including writing robust, maintainable code for services, tools, and automation, and comfort with standard Python development workflows.

  • Familiarity with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, AKS, or similar).

  • Experience using AI-native development tools (e.g., Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar AI-assisted IDEs) as part of your everyday engineering workflow.

  • Solid understanding of monitoring, logging, and alerting practices and tools (e.g., CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or similar).

  • Demonstrated ability to work in agile, collaborative, high-trust engineering teams and to partner effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience supporting LLM/agentic AI workloads in production (e.g., prompt orchestration, model gateways, vector stores, RAG systems).

  • Background in financial systems, data compliance, or regulated industries (payments, healthcare, etc.).

  • Exposure to Terraform or other IaC tools for multi-cloud environments.

  • Experience building or operating multi-tenant platforms and shared services.

  • Create, operate, and manage MCP tools and MCP gateways to securely connect AI agents to external systems, enforce governance, and centralize tool access and observability.

Why Join WEX:

You'll work within a lean, high-impact engineering group that values curiosity, autonomy, and real-world problem-solving. We move fast but balance innovation with responsibility-because AI at WEX touches millions of businesses and end users.

Join us to help evolve the AI platform that powers intelligent systems for how enterprises move money, manage fleets, and make decisions.
