What is a remote RPG programmer?

Remote RPG Programmers are software developers who specialize in using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, typically for IBM i (AS/400) systems, and perform their work from a remote location rather than an onsite office. Their responsibilities often include developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with teams via digital communication tools. Working remotely allows these professionals to serve clients or employers worldwide, providing flexibility while leveraging their expertise in legacy and modern RPG codebases.

What does a remote RPG programmer do?

A remote RPG programmer works in software development, creating new applications or tools using the report program generator language, which was originally designed for the IBM minicomputer system on the AS/400 and i-Series of computers. RPG is one of the most frequently used programming languages, and significant amounts of business enterprise, infrastructure operations, and other essential system controls use it. As a remote RPG programmer, you work from home as part of a larger team of developers, building web and windows applications. Your duties and responsibilities include scripting tests, checking code, and building out programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote RPG programmer?

To thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, you need strong proficiency in RPG (Report Program Generator) language, experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or programming. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer, CL programming, and database management systems such as DB2 is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving ability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially for remote work environments. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of business-critical applications while enabling collaboration and independence in a distributed team.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote RPG programmers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Remote RPG Programmers often work with designers, artists, and other developers who may be located in different time zones, which can make real-time communication and collaboration challenging. Effective use of project management tools, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings are essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on game features and technical requirements. Additionally, maintaining code consistency and integrating various modules smoothly require strong version control practices. Being proactive in communication and adaptable to different workflows helps overcome these challenges and ensures successful project delivery.

Job description

Genesis10 is currently seeking an AI Agentic Engineer for a contract position with a Leading Pharmacy Benefit Manager located in Eagan, MN. This is a 12+ month contract opportunity. This position is fully remote.
Compensation: $61.95 - $63.86 per hour, W2, based on qualifications

Position Overview:
We are hiring for a role that is not a traditional AI/ML or Java developer position. This is a backend engineering role for someone who embraces an AI-first, Specification-Driven Development (SDD) approach. The ideal candidate will utilize AI tools to generate a significant portion of the code and will then be responsible for reviewing, testing, debugging, and refining the output, acting more as an AI engineering orchestrator and code validator rather than manually writing every line of code.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Use AI/LLMs and Copilot tools to generate backend application code, APIs, tests, documentation, and other engineering artifacts
  • Translate requirements into clear technical specifications, prompts, API contracts, and workflows that AI can execute against
  • Review and validate AI-generated Java/Spring Boot code for defects, hallucinations, security issues, performance problems, and architectural violations
  • Build/integrate agentic AI capabilities into enterprise applications
  • Develop and support backend APIs, microservices, integrations, and shared services
  • Apply Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) practices to ensure AI-generated solutions are accurate and production ready
  • Help the organization establish reusable AI-first engineering practices and patterns

Primary Requirements:

  • Strong Java and Spring Boot development background
  • Knowledge of Spring Data JPA and Spring Security
  • Experience with REST APIs and microservices
  • PostgreSQL and relational database experience
  • Strong code review, debugging, testing, and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to understand code deeply enough to identify problems in AI-generated code
  • Hands-on experience using AI/LLMs for software development
  • GitHub Copilot and/or Microsoft Copilot experience
  • Understanding of LLMs, prompt engineering, and AI-assisted development
  • Experience with or understanding of Specification-Driven Development (SDD) / specification-first development
  • Strong interest in allowing AI to generate the initial solution rather than defaulting to manually coding everything

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with Gemini, Google Vertex AI, Vertex AI Agent Studio, or Agent Builder
  • Experience with Google Agent Development Kit (ADK) or other Agent SDK/frameworks
  • Experience integrating AI/agentic AI into an application
  • BigQuery
  • Change Data Capture (CDC) / Slowly Changing Dimensions (SCD)
  • RAG / GraphRAG / grounding
  • Experience with GCP, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, GKE or Cloud Run
  • React knowledge is a plus but not required

If you have the described qualifications and are interested in this exciting opportunity, please apply!
