What is a remote RPG programmer?

Remote RPG Programmers are software developers who specialize in using the RPG (Report Program Generator) programming language, typically for IBM i (AS/400) systems, and perform their work from a remote location rather than an onsite office. Their responsibilities often include developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with teams via digital communication tools. Working remotely allows these professionals to serve clients or employers worldwide, providing flexibility while leveraging their expertise in legacy and modern RPG codebases.

What does a remote RPG programmer do?

A remote RPG programmer works in software development, creating new applications or tools using the report program generator language, which was originally designed for the IBM minicomputer system on the AS/400 and i-Series of computers. RPG is one of the most frequently used programming languages, and significant amounts of business enterprise, infrastructure operations, and other essential system controls use it. As a remote RPG programmer, you work from home as part of a larger team of developers, building web and windows applications. Your duties and responsibilities include scripting tests, checking code, and building out programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote RPG programmer?

To thrive as a Remote RPG Programmer, you need strong proficiency in RPG (Report Program Generator) language, experience with IBM i (AS/400) systems, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or programming. Familiarity with tools like IBM Rational Developer, CL programming, and database management systems such as DB2 is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving ability, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills, especially for remote work environments. These competencies ensure efficient development, maintenance, and troubleshooting of business-critical applications while enabling collaboration and independence in a distributed team.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote RPG programmers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Remote RPG Programmers often work with designers, artists, and other developers who may be located in different time zones, which can make real-time communication and collaboration challenging. Effective use of project management tools, clear documentation, and regular virtual meetings are essential to ensure everyone stays aligned on game features and technical requirements. Additionally, maintaining code consistency and integrating various modules smoothly require strong version control practices. Being proactive in communication and adaptable to different workflows helps overcome these challenges and ensures successful project delivery.

Job description

WHO WE ARE

DebtBook is the financial platform powering treasury and capital markets across the public sector. State and local governments, public universities, health systems, and the bankers and advisors who serve them run trillions of dollars in debt, cash, and investments on DebtBook.

We've built the most sophisticated treasury platform in public finance - sitting at the intersection of treasury management and a $4 trillion fixed income market that's been waiting for modern infrastructure.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

We are looking for a full stack Senior Software Engineer.ย  This could be a great opportunity if you know a lot of front-end and you are looking to expand your back-end skills. You will need to balance working on projects on your team and working across teams to implement improvements to our front-end patterns.ย  You will not be writing all of the front-end code for your team, and should have some time to learn and grow your back-end skills.ย  Our engineers get to work on products in multiple stages of maturity: we are enhancing some products that have been in use for years, we are launching some products, and we have some that are in early development.
Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

HOW WE WORK

  • Our application is a Majestic Monolith built with Ruby on Rails, React, and PostgreSQL.ย  Our app is hosted in AWS, and we use GitLab for our CI/CD pipelines and deployments.ย  We use feature flags to allow us to continually integrate our code.
  • Our front-end is built with React, TypeScript, and MUI React.ย  We have an in-house library of accessible components that is documented in StoryBook.ย  Most of the components are built out and being used in new development, and we are in the process of implementing them throughout existing parts of the application.
  • Our back-end is a Ruby on Rails JSON API that communicates with a React SPA (single page application).
  • All of our engineers work on the front-end, back-end and database.ย  We have some engineers who are much more experienced in one, but we can all do some work in any part of the stack.
  • We have a small dedicated infrastructure team, but our teams deploy and monitor their own code.
  • Engineers collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and industry specialists to understand problems and design solutions.ย  Engineersย  write and manage breaking down work into tickets and owning the tickets.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Participate in all stages of the SDLC: solution shaping, system design, ticket writing/breakdown, write full-stack code, review code, perform deployments, participate in monitoring, and gather data for reporting.
  • Own the quality of your work.ย  Write tests and work with your team to ensure everything works before merging and releasing.
  • Work cross-functionally on your team to ensure work is scoped to deliver quickly and deliver the right functionality.
  • Work collaboratively with other cross functional product-focused teams

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • 4+ years of related professional experience
  • Experience with React
  • Some familiarity with back-end web development
  • Ability to communicate complicated technical concepts well with teammates in all functions, including non-technical roles

WHY DEBTBOOK

DebtBook is a fast-growing company where we dream big, move fast, make an impact, and bring joy to everything we do. Our core values drive our success as an organization, and we are looking for talented teammates who share our passion for challenging the status quo, innovating in all we do, and wanting to make a difference.

When it comes to benefits and perks, we are committed to supporting our employees' well-being to make their lives better, both in and out of the office. We offer:

  • Location: Charlotte NC (Hybrid - Flexible)
  • Annual salary range is $125,000-165,000 based on experience
  • Up to 10% annual bonus
  • Equity (stock options) for all employees
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Flexible work schedules and generous leave policies
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Stipend for remote workers to set up their ideal work space
  • Annual Company Onsite

Interview Process

All interviews are held remotely over video calls.

  • 30 min - Introduction Call with Recruiter
  • 1 Hour - Technical Interview with Director
    • Our technical assessment is a pair programming session designed to be very similar to our daily work.ย  It is a collaborative session and it covers FE (react), BE (Ruby on Rails), and SQL schema design.
  • 2 hr - Onsite Interview with members from the Product, Design, and Engineering teams

OUR "GOAT" VALUES

GROW Continuously

  • We believe in continuous improvement, never accepting the status quo as good enough, and iterating to move quickly without compromising on quality.
  • We are energized by the fast-paced rate of change that growth demands and see new challenges as opportunities for resilience and personal development.
  • We are driven by curiosity to think creatively, innovate, and experiment, and we humbly incorporate lessons learned from success and failure along the journey.

OWN Your Outcomes

  • We hold ourselves accountable for exceptional effort, execution, reliability, professionalism, and results that add tremendous value for customers.
  • We are all individual contributors, responsible for delivering value to our customers, team, and company with every action we take.ย
  • As managers, we lead by example in both what we do and how we do it, and stay personally familiar with the work as we coach our teams.
  • We follow through on our decisions and commitments with action.

ABOVE & Beyondย

  • We create moments of magic, surprising and delighting our customers at every touchpoint.
  • We run towards problems and enthusiastically jump in to help colleagues however we can be valuable.
  • We take pride in proactively doing the extra little things that set us apart, even when no one is watching.

TEAM Over Ego

  • There is no task needed at DebtBook that is beneath any of us.
  • We work hard to be the teammate others want on their team.
  • We have the courage to have hard conversations and the grace to receive honest feedback in pursuit of excellence.
