Applications Engineer II (Laser & Fabrication Systems)
Entity: DNE Laser USA, LLC
Department: Engineering & Applications
FLSA Status: FT, Exempt
Travel: ~40-60% (customer sites, demos, trade shows)
Location: Waukesha, WI (Showroom-based) or Remote (as approved)
Compensation: $85,000-$100,000
Position Overview
The Applications Engineer II serves as a technical expert in Fiber laser cutting systems and metal fabrication processes, supporting both pre-sale and post-sale customer engagements. This role is responsible for demonstrating equipment capabilities, developing optimized cutting processes, parameters, and ensuring successful customer adoption of DNE Laser USA solutions.
You will work closely with Sales, Field Service, and customers to validate applications, improve production efficiency, and position DNE equipment as a best-in-class solution within the steel fabrication industry.
This role blends hands-on technical work, customer interaction, and process optimization-ideal for someone with a strong fabrication background who enjoys solving real-world production challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Customer-Facing Applications Support
• Conduct live machine demonstrations for prospective customers using DNE laser systems (sheet, tube, and automation)
• Develop and validate cutting processes based on customer-provided materials, prints, and production requirements
• Perform time studies and cost analyses to demonstrate ROI and operational efficiency
• Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
Process Development & Optimization
• Optimize laser cutting parameters for various materials (mild steel, stainless, aluminum, etc.)
• Troubleshoot cutting quality, edge finish, and throughput issues
• Develop standard process libraries and best practices for internal and customer use
• Collaborate with customers to improve workflow, nesting strategies, and machine utilization
Sales & Cross-Functional Support
• Partner with Territory Sales Managers to provide technical expertise throughout the sales cycle
• Assist in solution design, including machine configuration and automation recommendations
• Support quoting accuracy by validating application feasibility and cycle times
• Provide technical input on competitive positioning vs. OEMs (e.g., Trumpf, Amada, Mazak, Bodor)
Training & Knowledge Transfer
• Train customers on machine operation, cutting processes, and basic troubleshooting
• Support internal training for Sales, Service, and Marketing teams
• Create documentation, application notes, and demo programs
Continuous Improvement & Product Feedback
• Act as the voice of the customer to provide feedback to internal teams and factory partners
• Identify opportunities for product improvements, new features, or process enhancements
• Stay current on industry trends, materials, and fabrication technologies
Qualifications
Required
• 3-6+ years of experience in fiber laser applications, service, or parameter development
• Hands-on experience with sheet or tube fiber laser cutting systems
• Strong understanding of fabrication processes (cutting, bending, welding basics)
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints
• Experience with nesting software and/or CAM systems
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently in a customer-facing, travel-heavy role
Preferred
• Experience with automation systems (load/unload, towers, material handling)
• Background with major OEM platforms (Trumpf, Amada, Mazak,Bodor,HSG,Mitsubishi etc.)
• Exposure to welding, robotics, or advanced fabrication processes
• Previous experience in a demo/application/sales support role
