Manager Claims - CH07AE

We're determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals - and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

Are you ready to take on a pivotal leadership role within the Complex Claims Unit (CCU)? CCU is a highly specialized home office claim organization responsible for managing the Company's most complex, high-exposure, and long-tail liability claims. These claims often involve environmental contamination, toxic torts, asbestos, sexual molestation, and other latent bodily injury or property damage exposures, and frequently present complex coverage, liability, causation, allocation, and litigation management challenges spanning multiple years of insurance coverage.

As a Claim Manager, you will lead a team of claim professionals responsible for handling some of the Company's most significant environmental and latent bodily injury matters. You will be accountable for delivering high-quality claim outcomes, outstanding customer service, strong financial stewardship, innovative claim strategies, and the development of a diverse and highly engaged team.

Responsibilities:

  • Effectively train, coach, and develop staff to enable them to perform their jobs and achieve individual and professional goals.

  • Lead a team responsible for investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and resolving complex environmental, toxic tort, asbestos, sexual molestation, and other long-tail liability claims.

  • Provide strategic oversight and direction on coverage, liability, damages, allocation, litigation management, and settlement strategies involving high-severity exposures.

  • Drive the development and implementation of innovative claim disposition strategies and pursue timely, effective claim resolutions.

  • Monitor claim performance, financial results, reserving accuracy, settlement outcomes, and key operational metrics, identifying trends and implementing appropriate actions.

  • Evaluate and communicate emerging industry developments, litigation trends, scientific developments, regulatory activity, and jurisdictional changes that may impact environmental and latent bodily injury exposures.

  • Partner closely with Coverage Counsel, Operations, Reinsurance, Underwriting, Actuarial, Product, Risk Control, brokers, agents, outside counsel, consultants, and senior leadership.

  • Oversee litigation strategy, including management of outside counsel, experts, consultants, and vendor partners.

  • Ensure consistent, high-quality claim handling and exceptional customer service across the team.

  • Build and maintain a high-performing, diverse, and inclusive team where individual strengths and perspectives are valued.

  • Promote continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance claim handling practices, operational effectiveness, and technological capabilities, including the use of data analytics and AI-enabled tools.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; advanced degree or other relevant professional designation, including JD, CPCU, AIC, ARM, are a plus.

  • Minimum of 7 years of casualty claim experience within a property and casualty claim organization.

  • Significant experience handling environmental, toxic tort, asbestos, sexual molestation, latent bodily injury, or other complex long-tail liability claims.

  • Strong understanding of complex insurance coverage issues, including occurrence-based liability coverage, allocation, trigger theories, long-tail exposures, bankruptcy trust considerations, and multi-year claim analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate liability, coverage, damages, and litigation risks and develop effective claim resolution strategies.

  • Superior negotiation, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Prior management experience, including direct leadership, employee development, mentoring, or project leadership responsibilities.

  • Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across business functions and with senior stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to coach technical claim professionals and provide strategic recommendations to management.

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.

  • Experience managing high-severity litigation and coordinating with outside counsel, experts, consultants, and other stakeholders.

  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and effectively manage workload in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service, employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, and continuous improvement.

  • Strong technical acumen and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and AI-enabled technologies, including Microsoft Copilot, with the ability to quickly learn and leverage new systems and tools.
