What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Risk Control Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Risk Control Consultant, you need a solid background in risk assessment, loss control, and safety management, often supported by a degree in safety, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with risk management software, virtual collaboration tools, and relevant certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or ARM (Associate in Risk Management) is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for excelling in a remote environment. These competencies enable consultants to effectively identify risks, deliver actionable recommendations, and support client safety from a distance.

How does a Remote Risk Control Consultant typically collaborate with clients and internal teams to implement effective risk mitigation strategies?

As a Remote Risk Control Consultant, collaboration is primarily facilitated through virtual meetings, regular check-ins, and digital reporting tools. Consultants work closely with clients to assess risk exposures, develop tailored recommendations, and guide implementation remotely. Internally, they coordinate with underwriting, claims, and loss prevention teams to share insights and ensure alignment on client strategies. Strong communication skills and a proactive approach are essential to building trust and ensuring successful risk management outcomes in a remote environment.

Job description

Description

Senior Complex Construction Claims Specialist - Complex CGL & Construction Liability (Litigated, $500K+)

Overview Liberty Mutual's Specialized Claims group has an immediate opening on our Complex Construction Claims Team. We're seeking an experienced claims professional who thrives on challenging, high-exposure commercial casualty matters arising from construction operations - including complex Commercial General Liability (CGL) and Construction Injury/Liability claims (all litigated or high-exposure losses $500,000+). You will own matters end-to-end, managing coverage and liability strategy, directing investigations and experts, coordinating litigation and outside counsel, and driving timely, defensible resolutions for our Construction Industry accounts. (Note: this role does not handle construction defect claims.)

There is a strong preference for the selected candidate to live within 50-mile radius of one of the listed hub offices (Boston, MA; Westborough, MA; Plano, TX; Suwanee, GA; Indianapolis, IN; Hoffman Estates, IL; Lake Oswego, OR; Las Vegas, NV, Chandler, AZ or Weatogue, CT).  This policy is subject to change.  We will consider a remote candidate if you do not live within 50-miles of one of these offices.

The salary range posted reflects the range for the varying pay scale that encompasses each of the Liberty Mutual regions, and the overall cost of labor for that region.   Target salary for this position is $105,000 to 130,000.

Why this role is a great fit for you

  • Work exclusively on technically complex, high-exposure construction-related casualty claims that require advanced legal and claims judgment.
  • Autonomy to set strategy, reserves and resolution plans, with authority to direct investigations and manage outside counsel and experts.
  • Opportunity to influence outcomes across underwriting, product and legal teams and to be a recognized technical resource on construction liability issues.
  • Exposure to multi-party, catastrophic injury and cross-coverage matters - valuable experience for senior claims leaders and litigators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of complex, litigated construction-related losses ($500K+) from assignment through resolution: coverage analysis, liability assessment, investigation planning, reserving, negotiation, settlement or denial where appropriate.
  • Lead coverage interpretation and application for issues commonly encountered in construction claims: additional insureds, tenders, indemnity agreements, other insurance, SIR/deductible mechanics, primary vs. excess placement, and limits erosion.
  • Direct litigation strategy: analyze pleadings, manage discovery and depositions, evaluate venue and trial risk, prepare for mediations and settlement conferences, and recommend and implement resolution strategies.
  • Build and lead the working team for each matter: coordinate Home Office Legal, defense counsel, SIU when appropriate, medical and causation experts, accident reconstructionists, engineers, and other technical consultants.
  • Select, supervise and evaluate outside counsel, including establishing budgets, staffing plans, billing guidelines expectations, and performance measures.
  • Set and adjust reserves based on defensible analysis and develop settlement strategies that protect the company's interests while advancing timely resolution.
  • Maintain accurate, complete file documentation and ensure secure handling of financial transactions and claim information.
  • Collaborate proactively with Underwriting, Risk Control, Reinsurance/Excess, Product and Subrogation teams; identify and communicate trends and technical insights.
  • Mentor and coach less-experienced claims professionals and contribute to team training, process improvements, and special projects
Qualifications
  • What we are looking for - Required

    • Substantial hands-on experience handling complex, litigated Commercial General Liability and/or Construction Liability claims at high exposure levels (preferably $500,000+).
    • Deep working knowledge of CGL and Construction Liability coverages and typical construction-related policy issues (additional insured wording, contractual indemnity, other insurance, primary/excess interaction, SIRs/deductibles).
    • Proven litigation management experience: selecting/managing defense counsel, directing discovery strategy, preparing for mediation/trial, evaluating exposure and settlement leverage.
    • Strong technical judgment and the ability to articulate and defend coverage and liability positions to legal, underwriting, and management partners.
    • Track record of using and directing experts (medical, causation, engineers, reconstruction) on complex causation and damages issues.
    • Excellent negotiation, communication and stakeholder management skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple high-priority matters and meet deadlines under pressure.
    • Bachelor's degree (preferred) and relevant claims/insurance industry certifications or licenses as applicable.

Employees may apply for a new role after completing 12 months of employment in their current position.
