Remote Relay Protection Control Engineer information

What does a remote relay protection control engineer do?

A Remote Relay Protection Control Engineer is responsible for designing, configuring, and maintaining the systems that protect electrical power grids from faults and failures, often working remotely. They ensure the correct operation of relays and protection devices that detect and isolate problems like short circuits, preventing damage and outages. Their work involves analyzing power system data, programming relays, performing remote diagnostics, and coordinating with utility teams to ensure reliable and safe power delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote relay protection control engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Relay Protection Control Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems, and relay protection principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software like SEL AcSELerator, ETAP, SCADA systems, and NERC certifications is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, especially when diagnosing issues and collaborating with remote teams. These skills are vital to ensure the reliable and safe operation of electrical grids, minimize downtime, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by remote relay protection control engineers when coordinating with field teams?

Remote Relay Protection Control Engineers often face challenges related to clear communication and timely data exchange with field teams, especially during system testing or troubleshooting. Since they primarily work remotely, ensuring that relay settings are implemented accurately and that field personnel understand complex instructions can be difficult. Utilizing standardized documentation, leveraging real-time communication tools, and building strong relationships with on-site staff are crucial for overcoming these obstacles and ensuring system reliability.

What is the difference between Remote Relay Protection Control Engineer vs Relay Protection Technician?

AspectRemote Relay Protection Control EngineerRelay Protection Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, relevant certifications (e.g., PE, NERC)Technical diploma or associate degree, specialized training
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and system integration in office or remote settingsOn-site maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation at substations
Industry UsageDesign and oversee relay protection systems remotelyImplement and maintain relay protection equipment physically

The Remote Relay Protection Control Engineer focuses on designing and managing relay protection systems remotely, often working in office or remote environments. In contrast, the Relay Protection Technician handles on-site installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of relay protection equipment. Both roles are essential in power systems but differ mainly in their responsibilities and work settings.

Job description

We're currently hiring Senior Electrical Engineers across multiple renewable energy business units, including:

  • Storage - Estimating Engineering

A DAY IN THE LIFE

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you'll play a key role in delivering safe, reliable, and innovative engineering solutions across utility-scale renewable energy projects. Depending on your background and interests, you'll support projects during either the preconstruction/estimating phase or project execution phase, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions from concept through construction.

A typical day may involve developing electrical designs, reviewing engineering packages, supporting utility interconnections, coordinating with Owners and Engineers of Record (EOR), evaluating constructability, and solving complex technical challenges across multiple concurrent projects. You'll work closely with Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, Construction, and Project Management to ensure designs are safe, economical, constructible, and aligned with client requirements.

Whether you're supporting Solar Project Engineering, Wind Estimating Engineering, or Battery Energy Storage Estimating Engineering, you'll contribute to projects that include underground collection systems, substations, transmission interconnections, protection and control systems, power quality studies, SCADA and communications, and utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

STEP INTO THE ROLE

  • Develop electrical engineering solutions supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects through either estimating or project execution.
  • Lead electrical design development, Basis of Design (BOD) documentation, engineering reviews, RFIs, and technical deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review electrical one-line diagrams, protection and control systems, grounding plans, cable routing, equipment layouts, and third-party engineering packages to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), Estimating, Project Engineering, Integrated Supply Chain, and Construction teams to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs.
  • Support utility interconnections, electrical equipment selection, procurement strategies, and technical submittal reviews.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs, constructability reviews, value engineering, and technical risk assessments that improve project execution and proposal competitiveness.
  • Mentor Engineer I, Engineer II, and CAD Designers through technical guidance, coaching, and engineering best practices.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining engineering quality, schedule commitments, and client expectations.
  • Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to strengthen engineering standards, workflows, and design quality.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited college.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification required, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
  • Four or more years of progressive electrical engineering experience supporting utility-scale power generation, renewable energy, industrial, EPC, or heavy infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing multiple engineering priorities while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.

WHAT SETS YOU APART

  • Experience supporting utility-scale solar, wind, or battery energy storage (BESS) projects.
  • Strong knowledge of underground collection systems, substations, transmission interconnections, protection and control systems, SCADA, power quality, load flow analysis, and electrical equipment sizing.
  • Experience in either Estimating Engineering (preconstruction) or Project Engineering (project execution), or a combination of both.
  • Experience collaborating with Owners, Engineers of Record (EOR), utilities, EPC partners, and construction teams throughout the engineering lifecycle.
  • Passion for solving complex engineering challenges, mentoring junior engineers, and continuously improving engineering quality and project delivery.
