Job description

Relativity User Authentication Team Engineer

Hybrid/Remote

Relativity is a leading legal data intelligence company building technology that helps users organize data, discover the truth, and act on it with confidence. Our AI-powered, cloud platform, RelativityOne, transforms massive volumes of complex information into actionable insights for litigation, investigations, regulatory inquiries, data breach responses, and other high-stakes legal work where accuracy and trust are crucial.

The world's largest law firms, corporations, and government agencies rely on Relativity's legal AI software to securely surface and manage the most relevant and impactful information in their matters. Beyond our commercial impact, we're deeply committed to expanding access to technology for academic institutions through Relativity Academic and supporting pro bono legal work through Justice for Change.

At Relativity, engineers don't just write code. They build the foundational systems that industries rely on to uncover critical insights, ensure compliance, and operate securely at scale. Our platform combines cloud-native architectures, modern developer tooling, and AI capabilities to deliver trusted outcomes across highly regulated environments.

The User Authentication team builds and operates tier-0 identity and authentication services that protect customer access to Relativity's platform. These services sit directly on the request path for every user interaction, requiring an exceptional focus on availability, security, and correctness. The team partners closely with product, security, and platform teams to deliver scalable authentication workflows, improve reliability and observability, and continuously raise the bar on operational excellence.

If you're passionate about building security-critical systems, designing for failure, and owning highly available services that operate at global scale, Relativity offers the opportunity to make a measurable impact.

Job Description and Requirements

  • Build and maintain integrations with identity providers, including OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and SAML-based systems
  • Own production reliability for critical services, including on-call rotations, incident response, and post-incident learning
  • Implement defense-in-depth security controls such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), token lifecycle management, and least-privilege access
  • Improve system observability through metrics, structured logging, dashboards, and alerting
  • Participate in code and design reviews with a strong emphasis on security, correctness, and failure modes
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, security, and platform teams to deliver authentication features, improvements, and migrations
  • Contribute to long-term identity and authentication strategy across the platform

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as C#, Java, or Python
  • Experience designing and operating cloud-based services
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including availability, failure handling, and scalability

Preferred

  • Experience building or operating authentication, authorization, or other security-critical systems
  • Working knowledge of OAuth2, OpenID Connect (OIDC), and/or SAML
  • Experience operating tier-0 or business-critical services with high availability requirements
  • Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and CI/CD practices in production environments

Why We Could Be a Great Fit
