Job Summary:
This position serves as a Research Administration Manager, providing research, administrative, and operational management for Dr. Jomol Mathew's research portfolio, which includes the Real World Data Collaborative, Data Science to Promote Precision Medicine, Real-world Evidence to Advance Community Health, and other health informatics projects.
Real World Data Collaborative consolidates vast amounts of real-world data from across Wisconsin into one easily accessible and compliant system. When fully built, the repository will include clinical data, biospecimens, data from state and federal agencies, and environmental data to provide a comprehensive view of Wisconsin's health and tackle health issues in the state. The Data Science to Promote Precision Medicine project focuses on biomedical big data. The Real-world Evidence to Advance Community Health (REACH) program aims to use health technology in new ways and further increase research participation from communities across the state. The REACH Program builds on 15 years of research with a mission to improve population health and well-being in Wisconsin and beyond.
The Research Administration Manager role is responsible for pre- and post-award research administration, including proposal preparation, sponsored research compliance, principal investigator effort monitoring and certification, budget development and monitoring, procurement coordination, and other research administration tasks in accordance with university and sponsor policies. The role serves as a liaison and subject matter expert among Dr. Mathew's research portfolio, the Department of Population Health Sciences Administration, and campus offices such as Research and Sponsored Programs.

The successful candidate will join an engaged and collaborative administrative team that primarily works in person. For the first 6 months, it is expected that the new hire will primarily work in person at our office located at 610 Walnut Street, Madison, WI. After the initial training window is completed successfully, a hybrid schedule with a mix of in office and at home work will be discussed.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Monitors effort and salary sources of the Principal Investigator to ensure sponsored research compliance, adjust payroll accounting, maintains updated and compliance research information for NIH and other federal agencies in their prescribed formats
Executes activities related to financial compliance, audit, or reporting on behalf of a unit
Executes research administration operational policies and procedures including financial, administrative, staffing, and compliance on behalf of a unit
Reviews and approves programmatic transactions spanning the life-cycle of sponsored projects to ensure compliance with institutional and/or sponsor policies and procedures
May have authority to submit proposals, agreements, or invoices to a sponsor on behalf of the principal investigator or project director
Serves as a key resource to leadership and staff in the unit as well as a liaison to partners and stakeholders
May supervise the day-to-day activities of research administration staff
Executes activities related to proposal submission, contract negotiation, and/or award setup on behalf of a unit
Provides training to faculty, staff, and/or administrators within the unit regarding policy, procedure, and/or execution of sponsored project administration

Compensation:
The minimum salary for this position is $90,000 annually, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Required Qualifications:
  • Recent work experience with a primary focus working in research administration in an academic, government or healthcare setting
  • Experience leading the process of IRB approvals and effort certification compliance, managing research budget (including ongoing monitoring of the budget)
  • Experience leading the development and submission of required sponsored research reports, such as NIH research performance progress reports

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship and TN visas. The selected applicant will be responsible for ensuring their continuous eligibility to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, a foreign national authorized to work in the United States without the need of an employer sponsorship) on or before the effective date of appointment. This position is an ongoing position that will require continuous work eligibility. If you are selected for this position you must provide proof of work authorization and eligibility to work.

  • Experience in research administration and management at UW Madison, or other UW institution
  • Knowledge about data science research, typical expenditures, research needs
  • Experience with large grant administration (over $5 million)

Bachelors degree in science, engineering, social science is preferred
