What is a remote radiation effects engineer?

Remote Radiation Effects Engineers are professionals who analyze and mitigate the impact of radiation on electronic systems and materials, often for aerospace, defense, or nuclear applications. Working remotely, they use specialized software and simulations to assess how radiation affects various components, ensuring systems remain reliable in high-radiation environments like space. Their work may include testing, data analysis, and developing protective solutions, all while collaborating with teams virtually. This role typically requires expertise in physics, electrical engineering, or a related field, and familiarity with radiation effects standards and testing protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote radiation effects engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Radiation Effects Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field, along with expertise in radiation effects on electronic components. Familiarity with simulation tools like SPICE, radiation testing protocols, and knowledge of standards such as MIL-STD-883 are typically required, and certifications in aerospace or nuclear industries can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills are essential soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure accurate analysis, reliable testing, and smooth collaboration with distributed teams to guarantee the resilience of electronic systems in radiation-prone environments.

How does a remote radiation effects engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure component reliability in space applications?

As a Remote Radiation Effects Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with design engineers, test engineers, and project managers to assess and mitigate the impact of radiation on electronic components used in space. This often involves participating in virtual meetings to discuss design modifications, reviewing test data, and providing recommendations based on your analysis. Effective communication and documentation are key, as you'll be relied upon to clearly explain complex technical findings and coordinate with geographically dispersed teams to ensure mission-critical components meet reliability standards.

Position Overview

System One is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Analyst to support the design and development of advanced nuclear reactor technologies. This role focuses on performing structural and finite element analyses (FEA) of reactor vessels, reactor internals, containment structures, and nuclear island components operating in high-temperature and radiation environments.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with structural mechanics, ANSYS, ASME design codes, and engineering analysis for complex mechanical systems. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to next-generation nuclear energy projects while working alongside a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural and mechanical analyses of reactor systems, vessels, internals, and nuclear island components.
  • Conduct finite element analyses (FEA) to evaluate structural integrity under thermal, pressure, seismic, and operational loading conditions.
  • Analyze equipment in accordance with applicable engineering codes and standards including ASME BPVC, ASCE, and AISC.
  • Support structural evaluations including stress, fatigue, fracture mechanics, buckling, creep, and thermal analyses.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, systems, and design engineers to optimize component designs for safety, manufacturability, and performance.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical reports, and design documentation.
  • Perform peer reviews to ensure compliance with engineering quality standards.
  • Support design reviews and provide technical recommendations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership as needed.
  • Serve as a technical resource for structural analysis activities.

Required Qualifications
