What is a remote QA automation engineer?

A Remote QA Automation Engineer is a software professional who designs, develops, and maintains automated tests to ensure the quality of software products, all while working from a remote location. They use various programming languages and testing frameworks to automate repetitive testing tasks, identify bugs, and verify that new features work as intended. Their work helps speed up the software development process by catching issues early and ensuring consistent product quality, even when collaborating with distributed teams. Remote QA Automation Engineers often collaborate with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders using communication and project management tools.

What does a remote QA automation engineer do?

As a remote QA automation engineer, you help develop software to test, debug, and troubleshoot issues with a product. This often involves digital products like apps, but QA automation can also be done for some physical products. In this role, you may design and build test automation frameworks, coordinate with designers to gather more information about products, create testing kits, create in-depth bug reports, and participate in root cause analysis work. Remote QA automation engineers often work from home and may use email, telephone, or voice chat to contact and coordinate with other employees, and may also use virtual office software to coordinate with larger groups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote QA automation engineer?

To thrive as a Remote QA Automation Engineer, you need a strong background in software testing, programming skills (often in Python, Java, or JavaScript), and experience with test automation frameworks, typically supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, Jenkins, JUnit, and continuous integration systems is commonly required. Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication are crucial for remote collaboration and effective troubleshooting. These skills ensure you can efficiently identify defects, maintain high software quality, and seamlessly work with distributed development teams.

How does a remote QA automation engineer typically collaborate with development teams to ensure software quality?

As a Remote QA Automation Engineer, collaboration with developers is often achieved through virtual meetings, code reviews, and shared project management tools. You'll participate in sprint planning sessions, daily stand-ups, and defect triage discussions to align on requirements and testing priorities. Utilizing platforms like Jira, Slack, or Microsoft Teams, you’ll provide feedback on test results, report issues, and suggest improvements. Regular communication and clear documentation are crucial for ensuring everyone stays updated, even when working across different time zones.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior QA Automation Engineer based in Netherlands.

As a Senior QA Automation Engineer, you'll champion a quality-first mindset across an agile software development environment. You'll contribute throughout the full software development lifecycle, from requirements refinement and test strategy through release validation. The role combines hands-on testing, automation, backend validation, API testing, database testing, and exploratory testing. You'll work closely with product, architecture, engineering, and quality teams to identify risks early and improve testability. As the automation expert within the team, you'll help build and maintain robust automated test suites for new and existing functionality. You'll also have the opportunity to influence engineering practices and raise software quality beyond your immediate team. This is a collaborative, remote role in a fast-moving environment where ownership, curiosity, and continuous improvement are highly valued.

Accountabilities
  • Contribute to feature refinement by challenging assumptions, clarifying requirements, identifying edge cases, and assessing system architecture and testability.
  • Develop and formalize comprehensive test strategies covering test scenarios, integration points, test data, APIs, applications, queues, databases, and result verification.
  • Deploy and configure software updates in QA environments and execute functional, integration, regression, exploratory, and end-to-end tests.
  • Investigate defects, identify root causes where possible, and document bugs with clear, accurate reproduction steps and supporting information.
  • Validate completed functionality and provide production sign-off when quality and acceptance criteria have been met.
  • Drive test automation for both new and existing features, working closely with quality engineering leadership to maintain reliable and effective automated test suites.
  • Act as the team's automation specialist and promote quality engineering practices across the wider development organization.
  • Perform backend testing through multiple interaction methods, including REST APIs, message queues, databases, and front-end interfaces.
  • Collaborate closely with product owners, architects, technical leads, developers, and other stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Advocate for quality, usability, testability, and continuous improvement while managing and reprioritizing multiple workstreams in a dynamic environment.
  • During the first 90 days, build a strong understanding of the products, customers, teams, tools, and processes, while establishing relationships and contributing to the team's quality goals.
  • Participate actively in feedback, professional development, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements
  • 5-8+ years of proven experience working as a QA tester or QA engineer within an Agile software development environment.
  • Strong experience developing test strategies, defining test scenarios, and writing detailed test cases.
  • Extensive experience testing backend systems using multiple approaches, including REST APIs, message queues, databases, and front-end interfaces.
  • Strong SQL skills and practical experience with relational database tools such as DBeaver, SQL Server, or MySQL Workbench.
  • Experience creating or seeding databases with test data is an advantage.
  • Solid understanding and hands-on experience with Git and version control workflows.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP; familiarity with AWS services including EKS, RDS, SQS, and API Gateway is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with API testing and documentation tools such as Swagger, Bruno, and Postman.
  • Experience writing and maintaining test scripts using JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of configuring mocks for isolated service testing is highly desirable.
  • Strong exploratory testing skills, with a sharp eye for functional defects, edge cases, usability concerns, and unexpected behavior.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical abilities, with the capacity to investigate issues and communicate findings clearly and efficiently.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the flexibility to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive, collaborative mindset with the confidence to challenge assumptions and advocate for quality.
  • At senior level, the ability to influence software quality beyond your immediate team and contribute to broader engineering improvements.
  • Strong ownership, curiosity, communication, and continuous-learning skills.
Benefits
  • Fully remote working environment.
  • Opportunity to work within a diverse, international team spanning multiple countries and cultures.
  • Meaningful opportunity to contribute to technology that improves financial access and supports communities.
  • High level of trust, autonomy, and ownership without unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Collaborative culture focused on customer impact, experimentation, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Opportunities to influence quality engineering practices beyond your immediate team.
  • Structured career and development conversations, including the opportunity to create a training and career growth plan aligned with your goals.
  • Regular feedback and opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues across product, engineering, and other functions.
  • A supportive environment that values well-being, collaboration, accountability, and having fun while doing meaningful work.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package, subject to the applicable employment location and hiring arrangement.
