Remote Python Mechanical Engineering involves coding, data analysis, and software development using Python in a mechanical context. In contrast, Remote Mechanical Design Engineers focus on CAD modeling, designing mechanical components, and prototype creation. Both roles require engineering backgrounds but differ in daily tasks and skill sets, catering to different aspects of mechanical engineering projects.

What is a Remote Python Mechanical Engineer?

A Remote Python Mechanical Engineer is a professional who applies principles of mechanical engineering while working remotely, often leveraging the Python programming language to automate tasks, analyze data, develop simulations, or enhance product designs. These engineers may work on projects such as computational modeling, data analysis, or developing scripts for engineering workflows, all from a remote location. The combination of mechanical engineering expertise and Python proficiency allows them to solve complex engineering problems efficiently and collaborate with teams virtually.

How do remote Python Mechanical Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams while working off-site?

Remote Python Mechanical Engineers often work closely with design, simulation, and manufacturing teams using digital collaboration tools. Regular video meetings, shared code repositories, and project management platforms help maintain open communication and ensure alignment on tasks and deadlines. Emphasis is placed on clear documentation and proactive updates to address time zone differences and minimize misunderstandings. This collaborative environment allows engineers to contribute effectively to multidisciplinary projects without being physically present.

Job description

We are seeking a Critical Mechanical Systems Specialist, Operations Engineering to support the readiness, reliability, and operational performance of mechanical infrastructure across CyrusOne data center sites. This role focuses on bridging design, construction, commissioning, and operations by validating that mechanical systems are safe, functional, and ready to support IT load from Day 1 onward. The role is highly autonomous, remote based, and requires regular travel to data center sites across the U.S.

What You Will Do:

  • Support and oversee commissioning activities for critical mechanical systems, including chiller plants, cooling towers, CRAH/CRAC units, heatโ€‘rejection systems, and controls/BMS
  • Validate mechanical system performance, sequences of operation, and operational readiness prior to customer load deployment
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and operational health checks focused on mechanical reliability, efficiency, and risk
  • Apply industry standards (including ASHRAE TC 9.9) as a practical reference when evaluating cooling performance, environmental conditions, and system readiness
  • Identify operational gaps or risks, document findings, and support mitigation and closeโ€‘out activities
  • Act as a bridge between design/construction teams and site operations to ensure documentation, procedures, and training are complete for turnover
  • Provide feedback and lessons learned to improve standards, processes, and future data center builds

What We Are Looking For:

Required

  • Experience supporting mechanical systems in missionโ€‘critical or industrial environments (data centers, oil & gas, healthcare, manufacturing, military, etc.)
  • Exposure to commissioning activities from an operations, validation, or oversight perspective (ownership not required)
  • Working knowledge of mechanical cooling systems such as chillers, cooling towers, CRAH/CRAC units, and heatโ€‘rejection systems
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, highly autonomous environment
  • Must be able to travel up to 50%, including weekโ€‘long site visits

Preferred

  • Familiarity with ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines as an operational reference
  • Experience working with operational tools such as CMMS, DCIM/BMS, or participating in incident response or RCA processes
  • Experience performing system audits, inspections, or readiness assessments
  • Data center experience (not required)

Work Environment:

  • Work Schedule: Standard business hours with occasional afterโ€‘hours support if needed; role is not primary firstโ€‘line response
  • This role requires travel of up to 50%
  • Willingness to be on-call for emergencies or after-hours troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding, high-stress environment during critical situations.

Education / Certifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent work experience.

Why Join Us?:

  • Remote work is supported
  • Be part of the rapidly growing data center industry powering the worldโ€™s digital infrastructure
  • Collaborative environment focused on commitment, accountability, respect and excellenceย
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans, life and disability insurance, access to mental health resources and employee assistance program
  • Competitive pay, performance bonus, 401(k) retirement plan with company match
