Remote Python Api Developer information

What does a remote Python API developer do?

A Remote Python API Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining application programming interfaces (APIs) using the Python programming language. These developers work from remote locations, collaborating with teams via online tools to create scalable and efficient APIs that allow different software applications to communicate. Their tasks often include writing clean and secure code, integrating third-party services, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that APIs meet performance and security standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Python API developer?

To thrive as a Remote Python API Developer, you need a solid understanding of Python programming, experience with RESTful API design, and familiarity with frameworks such as Django or Flask, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications. Proficiency in using version control systems like Git, API documentation tools (e.g., Swagger), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure robust API development, seamless team collaboration, and reliable delivery of scalable software solutions in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Python API developers, and how can these be managed effectively?

Remote Python API Developers often face challenges such as coordinating with distributed teams across time zones, ensuring clear communication about API requirements, and managing code consistency and integration. To overcome these, it's important to use collaborative tools like version control systems, participate actively in code reviews, and schedule regular check-ins with team members. Adopting well-documented coding standards and leveraging automated testing can also help maintain code quality and streamline collaboration.

What is the difference between Remote Python Api Developer vs Remote Backend Developer?

AspectRemote Python Api DeveloperRemote Backend Developer

Work EnvironmentRemote, collaborative teams, tech companiesRemote or on-site, tech startups, enterprises
Common Industry UsageWeb services, API development, SaaS platformsFull-stack or server-side development across industries

Remote Python Api Developers focus specifically on designing and maintaining APIs using Python, often working on web services and SaaS platforms. Remote Backend Developers have a broader scope, working with multiple programming languages and handling server-side logic across various industries. While both roles require backend skills, the Python Api Developer specializes in API-centric tasks with Python as the primary language.

Job description

Overview

Lynker Corporation is a leading provider of innovative solutions in weather and climate science. With a commitment to excellence and a passion for innovation, Lynker leverages cutting-edge technologies and scientific expertise to support the creation and delivery of improved operational weather forecasts. As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced API Developer to join our growing team.

Responsibilities

Duties of the API Developer will include the following:

  • API development: design and build APIs that ingest structured data and serve results to downstream users and applications.
  • Structured outputs: generate versioned, schema-conformant outputs in multiple formats, including PDF and JSON, that faithfully represent the underlying data.
  • Schemas & versioning: define and maintain output schemas, data contracts, and schema and API versioning, using standards such as OpenAPI and JSON Schema, so consumers can rely on stable interfaces as the system evolves.
  • CLI (secondary): provide a lightweight command-line interface over the same functionality for scripted and batch use.
  • Security & deployment: help package and deploy services soundly, applying good practices for access control, dependency management, and compliance in secure or government-adjacent environments.
  • Testing & validation: write unit and integration tests and output-validation checks to confirm results are correct, well-formed, and reproducible.
  • Documentation & collaboration: document APIs, schemas, and output formats; coordinate with the Science and Platform teams that define the underlying data and logic to keep interfaces clear.

Qualifications

The API Developer selected should have the following:

  • Master's in computer science, software engineering, data science, or a related field; or a Bachelor's plus 1-2 years building APIs, services, or data pipelines; or equivalent practical experience, including military or self-taught paths.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language; Python experience is a plus, as it is the likely production language for this work.
  • Experience designing and consuming REST/JSON APIs and working with structured data formats.
  • Understanding of data schemas and versioning, and why stable data contracts matter to downstream consumers.
  • Comfort with Git, Linux, testing, and command-line workflows.

The Ideal API Developer will have the following:

  • Experience generating documents or reports programmatically (e.g., PDF generation) and producing multiple output formats from a single source of truth.
  • Familiarity with schema definition and validation tooling (e.g., JSON Schema) and format versioning practices.
  • Exposure to environmental, geospatial, or scientific data, and formats such as GeoJSON or GeoParquet.
  • Experience with containerization, Infrastructure-as-Code, and CI/CD for reliable, repeatable builds and deployments (e.g., Docker, Terraform or CloudFormation, GitHub Actions).
  • Systems, infrastructure, or networking experience, and familiarity with secure deployment on AWS (e.g., access management, or a security credential such as CC or Security+).
  • Experience with R, including Shiny, or other languages for data apps and rapid prototyping.
  • Familiarity with Rust or an interest in contributing to Rust-based tooling.
  • Colorado Front Range presence for periodic in-person collaboration.
