Remote Prototyping Engineer information

What does a remote prototyping engineer do?

A Remote Prototyping Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and testing prototypes of products or systems while working from a remote location. They use digital tools to collaborate with teams, create models, and iterate on designs based on feedback. Their work is essential in transforming concepts into tangible prototypes that can be evaluated for functionality, usability, and manufacturability. This role typically requires strong technical skills, experience with prototyping software, and effective remote communication abilities.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote prototyping engineer?

To excel as a Remote Prototyping Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering fundamentals, rapid prototyping techniques, and experience in CAD design, typically backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with prototyping tools such as 3D printers, CNC machines, and collaborative platforms like SolidWorks or Fusion 360 is essential; certifications in product design or manufacturing can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, effective remote communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for success in distributed teams. These competencies enable efficient development of innovative prototypes, ensure clear collaboration, and drive project success in a remote environment.

How does a remote prototyping engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams while working remotely?

Remote Prototyping Engineers often work closely with product managers, designers, and developers to transform ideas into functional prototypes. Collaboration is facilitated through regular video meetings, shared digital workspaces, and version-controlled repositories for code and design assets. Effective communication and documentation are essential to ensure alignment across time zones and disciplines. By using collaborative tools like Slack, Figma, and GitHub, Remote Prototyping Engineers can efficiently iterate on prototypes and incorporate feedback from stakeholders, ensuring project momentum even in a distributed work environment.

What is the difference between Remote Prototyping Engineer vs Remote Product Designer?

AspectRemote Prototyping EngineerRemote Product Designer
Primary FocusDeveloping and testing prototypes to validate technical feasibilityDesigning user interfaces and experiences for products
Skills & CredentialsEngineering background, prototyping tools, technical knowledgeDesign skills, UX/UI tools, creativity
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with engineers and developersWorks closely with users, product managers, and developers
Industry UsageTech, hardware, software developmentTech, consumer apps, digital products

While both roles involve creating prototypes, the Remote Prototyping Engineer focuses on technical feasibility and engineering prototypes, whereas the Remote Product Designer emphasizes user experience and visual design. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right role based on your skills and career goals.

Job description

The Electronics for Contested Space Group develops advanced electronic systems and technology for the protection of our Nation's most important space capabilities. We design and develop state-of-the-art satellites and satellite payloads, novel concepts for resilient space architectures, and the Nation's most sensitive radars, optics, and passive RF systems. The group also provides engineering rigor and experience to some of the most critical National Security programs through Laboratory-wide collaboration and acts in an advisory capacity to the U.S. Government. Examples of recent projects include the prototyping of electronic systems and effects, hardware-in-the-loop testing of tactically relevant payloads with surrogate threat systems, developing RF subsystems for satellites, and analysis of spacecraft mission dynamics, environments, and resiliency.

Job Description

Group 94, Electronics for Contested Space, is seeking an electrical engineer to design, build, and test advanced electronics and RF systems. Activities may include algorithm development, hardware development, system integration, field data collection, data analysis, documentation and reporting, and independent problem-solving. The successful candidate will contribute to multi-disciplinary teams executing advanced research and developing systems critical to National Security. Experienced engineers with strong interest in signal processing, remote sensing, RF / antenna design, electronic warfare, and RF applications are strongly encouraged to apply.  Occasional travel to support field exercises, presentations to sponsors and the community, and other events may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field with directly relevant experience
  • A technical degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience will be considered
  • Significant professional or academic experience in at least two of the following areas, and some familiarity and career interest in several others:
    • System engineering for RF applications, e.g., radar, communications, electronic warfare, remote sensing
    • Radar systems: including radar system design, evaluation and analysis
    • Remote sensing: passive/active RF and optical systems analysis, simulation, high-level design
    • RF system and/or high-speed digital system design, fabrication, and test
    • Electronics: analog and/or digital circuits, prototype test development and execution
    • Space systems: vehicle design, space environment design and analysis, operations
  • Demonstrable ability to:
    • Develop respectful, productive working relationships
    • Communicate effectively in written and oral form, to both technical and non-technical audiences
    • Learn and apply advanced technical knowledge quickly and proficiently
    • Analytical and/or scientific programming familiarity (e.g. MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or similar)
  • Active Top Secret Security Clearance highly desired

Recent Graduate Hiring Range: $100,200-$120,000
