Remote Project Architect information

What is a remote project architect?

A Remote Project Architect is a licensed architect who plans, designs, and oversees building projects while working from a location outside the traditional office, often from home. They collaborate with clients, consultants, and contractors using digital tools and software to manage projects remotely. Their responsibilities include creating architectural drawings, ensuring code compliance, and coordinating all phases of the design and construction process. Remote Project Architects must have strong communication skills and be adept at using collaboration platforms to keep projects on track. This role offers flexibility but also requires a high level of organization and self-motivation.

What is the difference between Remote Project Architect vs Remote Design Coordinator?

AspectRemote Project ArchitectRemote Design Coordinator
CredentialsArchitect license, degree in architectureDesign or architecture-related degree, certification optional

Industry UsageDesigning buildings, overseeing project executionSupporting design processes, coordinating project details
Search IntentArchitectural design, project management, remote architecture jobsDesign support, project coordination, remote design roles

The Remote Project Architect typically holds an architecture license and leads building design projects, overseeing all phases from concept to completion. The Remote Design Coordinator focuses on supporting design teams, managing schedules, and coordinating project details without requiring licensure. Both roles often work remotely within architecture firms, but their responsibilities and credentials differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote project architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Project Architect, you need a professional degree in architecture, architectural licensure, and solid experience in design development and project management. Proficiency with BIM software such as Revit, AutoCAD, and collaboration platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams is typically required. Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and organizational skills help you coordinate with distributed teams and clients. These capabilities ensure projects are delivered effectively, on time, and within budget, even when working remotely.

How does a remote project architect effectively coordinate with clients and multidisciplinary teams across different locations?

As a Remote Project Architect, communication and collaboration are central to success. You'll frequently use digital tools like BIM platforms, video conferencing, and project management software to keep all stakeholders aligned and projects moving forward. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and proactive updates help bridge geographic gaps and ensure design intent is maintained. Being proactive about time zone differences and fostering a culture of transparency are key strategies for building strong working relationships remotely.

Job description

If you think your skills, experience and aspirations make you a good match for this position, we encourage you to apply.
ABOUT THE ROLE

At CannonDesign we believe in leveraging data-driven solutions throughout our projects to improve outcomes. Our integrated BIM environment enables this process.  The digital technology manager is responsible for ensuring the digital health and delivery of the project or program. While this role requires technology expertise, the driving need of this role is to provide a strategic understanding of how technology (both new and existing) can be best leveraged on large complex projects. This involves being part of the project from the RFP phases (recognizing any digital requirements or opportunities to advance technology), to being part of the capture and contract phase (to recognize any onerous digital requirements or capitalize on technology capabilities) through the digital planning of the design, execution and delivery phase of the project or program.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Partner with project leadership, clients, and consultants to define and lead project-specific digital strategies encompassing BIM, VDC, data management, and technology integration from pursuit through delivery.
  • Lead the development and review of contractual and digital deliverables, including BIM Execution Plans; escalate contractual or scope conflicts to Design Technology and Legal teams as needed.
  • Identify and own project digital requirements, including BIM strategies, data exchange protocols, advanced model delivery, and digitally enabled workflows.
  • Establish and oversee model management frameworks for large or complex programs, including audits, performance metrics, optimization strategies, and consistency across multiple teams or packages.
  • Lead and facilitate digital coordination and client and consultant meetings (e.g., BIM/GIS coordination, clash detection, digitally enabled design reviews).
  • Oversee software lifecycle compatibility, file version management, and data exchange strategies to ensure interoperability and efficiency within project team and consultants.
  • Lead onboarding for CannonDesign and consultant team members, ensuring consistent understanding of digital strategy, workflows, collaboration platforms, and firm standards.
  • Partner with the Design Technology team to define and implement best practices, standard workflows, and scalable processes for large programs.
  • Mentor project teams in the implementation of firm tools, workflows, and emerging digital practices.
  • Identify gaps in firm tools, capabilities, or processes and propose enhancements or new technologies to improve project outcomes and advance firm expertise.
  • Lead the evaluation, piloting, and integration of new digital tools and workflows on projects; collaborate with Design Technology to scale successful solutions across teams and offices.
  • Manage member access, permissions, and project-specific licenses for digital environments; ensure compliance and coordinate with IT and Design Technology on access strategies
  • Support digital collaboration across multi-office teams and external partners to maintain model health and delivery quality.
  • Travel as required.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED
  • Bachelor or Master degree in Architecture, Engineering, Design Technology, or related field required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience working in the digital realm of the A/E/C industry with a solid understanding of project phases from design through construction/close out required.
  • Prior experience in BIM management, VDC coordination etc. for large programs or projects is preferred.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills,
  • Must have experience training others in the design, delivery, and use of BIM.
  • Strong leadership skills and client engagement capabilities.
  • Must be knowledgeable in design software and comfortable with new technology testing and adoption.
  • Strong technical knowledge of model authoring tools like Revit, analysis tools like, Insight 360, Dynamo, and review tools like Navisworks, Bluebeam, Revizto, Enscape and other Design Applications.
  • Knowledge of the Revit API is preferred but not required.

The salary range for this position is $ 88,600 to $110,700 annually.  This salary range is the range we believe is the anticipated range of possible base compensation at the timing of the posting.
