Employees in these roles work from home, utilizing online systems to evaluate clinical information, communicate with providers, and ensure compliance with insurance policies. This position requires a strong understanding of medical terminology, insurance guidelines, and attention to detail to facilitate timely and accurate approvals or denials. Remote prior authorization specialists help streamline patient care by acting as a liaison between healthcare providers and insurance companies.

What is a remote prior authorization job?

Remote prior authorization jobs focus on working with insurance companies to coordinate benefit coverage and get approval to provide care for a patient. In this pre-authorization role, you may collect documentation and proof of insurance, perform data entry, help evaluate the need for a particular process, and otherwise work from home to help manage the prior authorization process. Remote prior authorization personnel often answer telephone calls to provide consultations, perform initial benefit verification, document case status, actions, and outcomes in a database, and use customer service skills to help expedite cases as needed. Since this is a remote call center-style job, you may be asked to arrange for a quiet office in your house that is free of distractions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote prior authorization specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Prior Authorization Specialist, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, insurance processes, and healthcare regulations, often supported by experience in medical billing or coding. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, insurance portals, and prior authorization software is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure timely and accurate processing of authorizations, reducing claim denials and supporting efficient patient care.

Remote Prior Authorization specialists often encounter challenges such as navigating complex insurance requirements, managing high volumes of requests, and maintaining clear communication with healthcare providers and payers. Staying organized and up-to-date on payer policies is crucial, as requirements can vary widely between insurers. Utilizing workflow management tools and fostering strong collaboration with clinical and administrative teams can help streamline processes and reduce delays, ultimately ensuring patients receive timely care.

Our innovative model combines the stability of a traditional hospital position with the flexibility of a private practice. We prioritize our clinicians' well-being and professional growth, offering a competitive compensation package and fostering a vibrant, collaborative culture.

Quality and patient experience are paramount to us. This means recruiting exceptional providers, championing evidence-based protocols, and displaying compassion in every patient interaction. Our exceptional psychiatrists operate with clinical autonomy, supported by experienced peers.

Our vision is to pioneer a new era of medicine by delivering world-class psychiatry. We believe in a future where every person can access the compassionate, high-quality care they need.

🚀 About the Role

Legion Health is seeking clinically excellent, patient-centered psychiatrists to collaborate with and supervise PMHNPs through secure telehealth workflows. This nationwide, remote, part-time contractor opportunity combines predictable flexibility with meaningful clinical responsibility and the support of a modern clinical organization.

Legion recruits and vets the PMHNPs and manages the operational infrastructure, while you provide responsive clinical guidance, chart review, mentorship, and independent prescribing decisions when legally permitted and clinically appropriate.

  • Flexibility: Set your own schedule for optimal work-life balance.

  • Work from Home: Collaborate with PMHNPs through secure telehealth and clinical systems.

  • Significant Administrative Support: You focus on patient care, and we’ll handle scheduling, insurance verification, billing, prior authorizations, pharmacy coordination, etc.

  • Commitment to Responsible Prescribing and High-Quality Care: We have rigorous, evidence-based protocols and provide objective diagnostic tools to ensure responsible and ethical prescriptions of controlled substances.

  • Legal Protection: We provide full malpractice insurance coverage.

  • PMHNP acquisition: Legion recruits and vets the PMHNPs you support.

  • Clinical autonomy: Exercise independent medical judgment within clear, evidence-based protocols.

  • Licensure and DEA Coverage: We’ll reimburse you for all fees associated with getting licensed in other states as required by Legion.

  • Credentialing Support: We handle all aspects and costs of credentialing with a large number of insurance plans, including commercial, ACA, and government, ensuring your legal and effective authorization within insurance networks.

  • Community of Clinical Excellence: You will work alongside the most talented psychiatrists and PMHNPs in the world. Our current providers have trained at some of the country’s most prestigious institutions.

  • Monthly Pay: We pay our providers every month for immediate financial benefit and planning ease.

  • Culture of Excellence through Innovation: Actively participate in ushering in a new era of mental health care through superior clinical care and technology.

  • Resources: We provide premium subscriptions to resources such as UpToDate and Carlat.

  • Exclusive Events: Engage with your colleagues through exclusive in-person and virtual events.

✅ Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with experienced PMHNPs treating low- and medium-acuity psychiatry patients using evidence-based approaches.

  • Conduct chart reviews and provide timely guidance on diagnoses, treatment plans, medication management, and clinical escalations.

  • Review and authorize prescriptions, including controlled substances when legally permitted and clinically appropriate.

  • Be available during agreed working hours and at the end of PMHNP shifts when required by applicable state rules.

  • Mentor clinicians and reinforce Legion's clinical standards, documentation expectations, and responsible-prescribing protocols.

  • Help Legion expand access to high-quality psychiatric care across the United States.

🧰 Qualifications
  • An active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and medication-management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Comfort providing care remotely and using electronic health record systems.

  • Commitment to patient-centered, compassionate, evidence-based care.

📍 Role Logistics
  • Location: Fully remote within the United States.

  • Schedule: Part-time

  • Compensation: $50K-150K per year, depending on the number and workload of PMHNPs supervised

🤝 Clinical Advisory Board

Legion’s Clinical Advisory Board brings together nationally recognized psychiatrists, physician executives, telepsychiatry pioneers, and primary-care leaders. Working closely with Legion’s medical leadership, they help shape our clinical quality standards, evidence-based care protocols, prescribing safeguards, risk-management practices, and continuous quality-improvement efforts as the company scales.
