Remote Power System Study Engineer information

What is the difference between Remote Power System Study Engineer vs Power Systems Analyst?

AspectRemote Power System Study EngineerPower Systems Analyst
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, relevant certifications (e.g., PE)Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering or related field, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentRemote or on-site, focused on power system studies and simulationsPrimarily office-based, analyzing power system data and performance
Industry UsageUtility companies, consulting firms, energy sectorUtilities, consulting, energy companies, research institutions

The Remote Power System Study Engineer primarily conducts detailed power system studies, simulations, and analysis to ensure grid stability and reliability. In contrast, the Power Systems Analyst focuses on analyzing existing power system data, performance metrics, and supporting decision-making. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials and often work within similar industries, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

How does a Remote Power System Study Engineer typically collaborate with utilities and project teams while working offsite?

As a Remote Power System Study Engineer, collaboration is primarily achieved through virtual meetings, shared technical documentation, and cloud-based modeling tools. You'll regularly interact with utility clients, project managers, and fellow engineers to discuss study requirements, review system models, and present findings. Effective communication and proactive scheduling are essential to ensure alignment on project goals and timely delivery of analyses, especially when working across different time zones. Building strong remote relationships and being adaptable with digital collaboration platforms are key to success in this environment.

What does a Remote Power System Study Engineer do?

A Remote Power System Study Engineer is responsible for analyzing and evaluating electrical power systems from a remote location. Their work involves performing studies such as load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and stability assessments to ensure the reliable and safe operation of power systems. They use specialized software to model electrical networks and identify potential issues or improvements. By working remotely, they collaborate with clients and teams through digital tools to deliver technical reports and solutions for projects in industries like utilities, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Power System Study Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Power System Study Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and a relevant engineering degree, often with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with specialized software such as PSS®E, ETAP, or DIgSILENT PowerFactory, and experience interpreting grid codes and standards, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate remotely with cross-functional teams are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate system studies, compliance with industry regulations, and efficient problem-solving for reliable power system operations.

This opportunity is ideal for a Senior Mechanical Engineer (LSR) with strong experience in pressure equipment design, engineering calculations, and code compliance who enjoys solving complex problems in live operating environments.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design and validation of engineered solutions used to maintain the integrity of critical infrastructure across industrial facilities. This role involves collaboration with engineering teams, fabrication partners, and inspection agencies to ensure designs meet both technical and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design and detail ASME-compliant leak repair enclosures and engineered clamp systems.
  • Prepare engineering calculations and designs in accordance with applicable ASME codes and standards.
  • Apply knowledge of on-stream leak repair theory and practical field applications.
  • Review mechanical drawings, design calculations, material specifications, and purchase requisitions.
  • Prepare and review technical and commercial estimates related to engineering design work.
  • Coordinate and assign work to engineers, designers, and drafting teams as required.
  • Authenticate engineering work in accordance with APEGA requirements.
  • Conduct technical reviews of vendor quotations to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, clients, consultants, fabrication subcontractors, and inspection agencies throughout project execution.
  • Work primarily within an office environment, with potential flexibility for remote work once a working relationship is established.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Design Engineering.
  • P.Eng designation in good standing with APEGA.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience with hands-on involvement in design calculations and drawing reviews.
  • Strong experience with drafting and engineering software including SolidWorks and Navisworks.
  • Familiarity with 3D scanning equipment and software such as Artec Studio.
  • Working knowledge of ANSYS Mechanical.
  • Strong understanding of pressure equipment design codes including ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII / IX, and ASME PCC-2.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of pressure testing principles and related codes.
  • Experience performing lifting analysis for equipment connections.
  • Familiarity with international engineering practices.
  • Exposure to hot tapping or on-stream repair work in industrial environments.
