What is a remote power electronics engineer?

Remote power electronics engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test electronic circuits and systems used to control and convert electric power, all while working from a remote location. They typically collaborate with teams via digital communication tools, handling tasks such as circuit simulation, PCB design, and firmware development for applications like renewable energy, electric vehicles, or industrial automation. Remote work allows these engineers to contribute to projects without being physically present in an office or lab, leveraging software and hardware tools that support virtual collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote power electronics engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Power Electronics Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit design, and power conversion principles, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with design and simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, PSpice, and proficiency in CAD software are typically required, along with knowledge of industry standards and certifications such as PE licensure. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to work independently are standout soft skills for remote collaboration and troubleshooting. These skills ensure the reliable design, analysis, and delivery of power electronic systems while maintaining productivity and quality in a remote work environment.

What are the common challenges faced by remote power electronics engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Power Electronics Engineers often encounter challenges related to effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams due to physical distance. Overcoming time zone differences and ensuring access to necessary hardware for prototyping and testing can also be difficult. Utilizing collaborative tools, scheduling regular video meetings, and leveraging remote access to lab equipment or simulation software can help address these issues. Proactively documenting design decisions and maintaining open lines of communication with team members are essential for success in a remote environment.

Job Summary

Our Client is an engineering and energy consulting firm supporting utilities, renewable-energy developers, investors, government agencies, and other power-sector clients. Since 2011, our client has supported more than 180 GW of clean and renewable energy projects.

We are seeking a Principal Power Systems Engineer to serve as a senior technical and client-facing leader. This role will lead complex grid interconnection, transmission planning, renewable and battery-storage integration, inverter-based resource (IBR), and reliability studies while mentoring engineers and supporting client growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead complex power-system, interconnection, transmission, renewable, storage, IBR, power-quality, and grid-compliance studies.
  • Establish study methodology, assumptions, modeling approaches, and quality standards.
  • Review, validate, and troubleshoot models and serve as a final technical reviewer.
  • Lead RMS and EMT modeling, validation, and IBR performance assessments.
  • Present and defend technical findings to clients, utilities, ISO/RTOs, and other stakeholders.
  • Manage key client relationships, project scope, schedules, and technical deliverables.
  • Mentor engineers and review technical work.
  • Support proposals, scopes, fee estimates, and business development.
  • Stay current on FERC, NERC, IEEE, ISO/RTO, utility, and Canadian grid requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, power systems, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of U.S. and/or Canadian power-sector experience, including senior or technical leadership responsibilities.
  • Strong experience with IBR modeling, grid integration, and complex power-system studies.
  • Advanced proficiency in at least two platforms such as PSCAD/EMTDC, PSS/E, GE PSLF, ASPEN, MATLAB/Simulink, or PowerGEM TARA.
  • Experience with RMS and EMT modeling and model validation.
  • Strong client-facing experience and ability to defend technical work before external stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and managing project scope, budget, and schedules.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. or Canada, or ability to obtain authorization through employer-sponsored immigration support. Visa sponsorship is available for the right candidate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s, M.Eng., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, power systems, or a related field.
  • PE, P.Eng., or progress toward professional licensure.
  • Experience with ISO/RTO interconnection queues and grid requirements.
  • Experience with grid-forming inverters, weak-grid conditions, renewable-plus-storage, or large-load/data-center interconnections.
  • Knowledge of NERC, IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, FERC, and Canadian operator requirements.
  • Programming or automation experience with Python, C++, MATLAB, Excel VBA, R, or similar tools.
  • Proposal development, regulatory, technical advisory, or business-development experience.

Work Environment / Schedule

  • Fully remote within the U.S. or Canada.
  • Collaboration across North American time zones.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel.
  • Valid passport and ability to travel across the U.S.–Canada border, as legally permitted.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $175,000–$215,000 base salary.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) with company contribution for U.S. employees or Group RRSP for Canadian employees.
  • PTO and company holidays.
