What is a remote pilot?

A remote pilot controls an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). As a remote pilot, your duties include flying and maintaining a drone and its systems, as well as remaining up-to-date on all FAA regulations regarding UAVs. To become a remote pilot, you must be at least 16 years old, be physically capable of handling a drone, and pass an FAA certification exam to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to manage the risks of flight. Career pilots must also be certified to handle unmanned aerial vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Pilot, you need strong spatial awareness, technical understanding of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and typically a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA (Part 107 in the U.S.). Familiarity with flight planning software, GPS navigation systems, and drone-specific hardware is often required. Excellent situational awareness, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding remote pilots apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant drone operations across diverse environments.

What are some common challenges remote pilots face when operating drones for commercial purposes?

Remote Pilots often encounter challenges such as maintaining strong situational awareness when flying drones beyond visual line of sight, navigating complex airspace regulations, and ensuring safe operations in changing weather conditions. Additionally, balancing real-time communication with team members, such as visual observers or project managers, is crucial for successful missions. Staying current with technology updates and regulatory changes is also essential for continued success in this fast-evolving field.

What is the difference between Remote Pilot vs Drone Operator?

Work EnvironmentTypically responsible for flight planning, safety, and compliance; may oversee multiple dronesPrimarily focuses on operating drones during missions or shoots

The following position is to join our RTX Enterprise Services team:

Seeking a strong and dynamic leader who owns the speed and momentum of enterprise AI initiatives as they move from pilot to scaled adoption. The Connected Strategy Lead role exists to close the gap between promising pilots and enterprise-wide value — identifying what is stalling, unblocking it, and building the repeatable mechanisms that keep initiatives moving instead of stalling in pilot purgatory.  The main objective of the role centers on driving the rollout of the Connected Strategy across the enterprise, with a focus on the Connected Factory and Connected Products initiatives. This leader will ensure teams are aligned, solutions are accelerated, standards are embraced, adoption is supported with expertise and targeted change management efforts, and business value is captured across the enterprise.

What You Will Do

Data Solutions & Factory Maturity:

  • Scale Xeta-powered data solutions across the product lifecycle.

  • Fully mature nine factories and three products.

  • Implement tier boards and advanced analytics visuals within 48 hours, scalable to 9 factories.

  • Ensure foundational data delivery from BUs for ES Digital Solution teams.

Product & Business Impact:

  • Drive execution of three connected product lighthouse projects with ROI of $10MM+.

  • Accelerate product performance improvement, serviceability, and operational availability.

  • Enable product teams to leverage data for better customer experiences and business outcomes.

AI Initiative Leadership:

  • Manage a portfolio of prioritized AI initiatives from pilot to scaled deployment.

  • Identify and resolve risks or stalled initiatives through cross-functional collaboration.

  • Maintain acceleration mechanisms (intake, prioritization, stage gates, kill criteria).

  • Represent initiative status, risks, and needs to the AI Council and senior sponsors.

Strategic Alignment & Governance:

  • Drive rollout of the Connected Strategy with measurable business value.

  • Align teams and accelerate delivery through workshops and change management.

  • Retire outmoded capabilities, introduce digital, data, and AI innovations, and streamline costs.

Desired Outcomes:

  • Deliver common digital solutions across lighthouse sites.

  • Achieve near-real-time performance and proactive monitoring.

  • Meet committed improvement targets for connected factories and products.

  • Evangelize digital, data, and AI capabilities across RTX.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires: A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 14 years prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 12 years experience

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in program or portfolio management within a large, matrixed corporate environment, with at least 5 years in a leadership role driving enterprise-level initiatives.

  • Prior experience driving large-scale initiatives from pilot to full deployment, with predictable timelines, measurable business impact, and established governance mechanisms and leading large, complex initiatives at scale, influencing and aligning cross-functional teams and stakeholders without formal authority.

  • Prior experience facilitating executive-level workshops and driving alignment on strategy and delivery among broad cross-functional teams.

  • Experience operating within regulated environments (e.g., ITAR/EAR, CUI), ensuring compliance while delivering business results under constraints.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Significant exposure to AI, data, or digital transformation initiatives, ideally as a leader or key contributor driving innovation and measurable outcomes at the enterprise level.

  • Proven ability to communicate complex initiatives, risks, and strategic outcomes to senior leadership in a clear, concise, and actionable manner.

  • Exceptional ability to build trust and credibility across all levels of the organization, including technical leads, business unit champions, and senior executives.

  • Expertise in leading large-scale change management efforts, enabling cultural and operational shifts while ensuring adoption of new capabilities and strategies.

  • Deep familiarity with enterprise-level strategic planning and execution frameworks, including Connected Strategy governance, acceleration mechanisms, and alignment with measurable business outcomes.
