What is a remote physical design engineer?

A Remote Physical Design Engineer is a professional who specializes in the physical implementation of integrated circuits (ICs) and works from a remote location. Their primary responsibilities include tasks such as floorplanning, placement, routing, and timing closure of semiconductor chips using electronic design automation (EDA) tools. They collaborate with teams across different locations to ensure that the chip layouts meet performance, power, and area requirements. Working remotely, these engineers utilize secure network connections and cloud-based tools to access design environments and communicate with colleagues. This role requires a strong understanding of digital design, VLSI concepts, and proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools.

How do remote physical design engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure design accuracy and project alignment?

Remote Physical Design Engineers work closely with circuit designers, verification engineers, and project managers through virtual meetings, shared project management tools, and version-controlled repositories. Effective communication is crucial, as they frequently review design updates, address integration issues, and ensure that deliverables meet timing, power, and area targets. Collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, and Jira help bridge the distance, while regular design reviews and milestone check-ins keep everyone aligned. This remote setup encourages proactive communication and documentation to maintain project momentum and design integrity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote physical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Physical Design Engineer, you need a solid background in VLSI design, digital circuit fundamentals, and experience with ASIC or FPGA physical implementation, usually supported by a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Expertise in EDA tools like Cadence, Synopsys, or Mentor Graphics, and familiarity with scripting languages such as TCL or Python, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and time management skills are essential for effective collaboration and project delivery in a remote environment. These competencies ensure efficient design cycles, high-quality silicon, and smooth coordination with distributed teams.

Axon 911 brings together Prepared and Carbyne under Axon. Together, we are creating the only platform that combines modern 911 infrastructure with an AI intelligence layer-helping public safety agencies move faster, make better decisions, and deliver better outcomes in the moments that matter most.
911 is the backbone of public safety, yet the professionals behind it have long been held back by outdated technology. Axon 911 is here to change that. Joining this team means more than taking a job-it means helping shape the future of emergency response and building a safer, more connected world.
Your Impact
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to own the design, development, and validation of complex electrical systems for mission-critical, connected hardware.
As a founding member of our hardware team, you will have significant ownership across the full hardware lifecycle, helping establish the technical architecture and engineering standards needed to scale.
You will work across schematics design and layout, RF coexistence, mechanical integration, form factor, and hardware debugging, solving complex challenges across cellular and Land Mobile Radio (LMR) frequencies, power, thermal performance, and signal integrity.
What You'll Do
  • Electrical & Board Design: Develop mixed-signal schematics and drive PCB layout across application processors, RF transceivers, power management, battery charging, memory, and high-speed digital interfaces.
  • RF Integration & Coexistence: Design and validate RF and radio systems across multiple wireless technologies, addressing RF performance, coexistence, interference, isolation, and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Mechanical Integration: Partner closely with Mechanical and Industrial Design to optimize board layout, component placement, antenna integration, and form factor within tight physical constraints.
  • Bring-Up & Debugging: Bring up, characterize, and troubleshoot hardware using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, power supplies, and other electrical and RF test equipment.
  • Production Readiness: Drive component selection, Bills of Materials (BOMs), design documentation, verification, and electrical readiness from concept through certification and mass production.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical direction to electrical engineering team members and external design partners, reviewing designs and driving hardware objectives to completion.
What You Bring
  • 7+ years of embedded electronics design experience and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline, with experience in high-speed, high-density, battery-powered, or low-power systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with PCB design and layout, RF integration and coexistence, mechanical integration, and hardware bring-up/debugging for highly integrated devices.
  • Experience across embedded subsystems, including application processors, microcontrollers, high-speed memory, power delivery, battery/charging circuitry, wireless/RF integration, and high-speed or wired interfaces.
  • Proven experience taking electronics from concept through schematic and PCB design, verification, certification, manufacturing ramp, and mass production.
  • Strong understanding of RF coexistence and interference across cellular and regulated frequency bands, along with signal integrity, power integrity, and electromagnetic compatibility considerations.
  • Hands-on experience with Cadence OrCAD and Allegro, as well as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, power supplies, and related electrical and RF test equipment.
  • Experience designing rigid, flex, or rigid-flex PCBs and working within tight mechanical and form-factor constraints.
