What does a remote photo editor do?

As a remote photo editor, your job is to work from home to edit a photograph for your client. Remote photo editors usually use Photoshop or another image editing program and take pictures directly from cameras or other resources to prepare them for print or digital use. This role is similar to a photo retoucher, but as an editor, you usually make more substantial changes to a given image. This can include applying special effects, using digital techniques to add or remove elements of the image, or modifying the image to make it easier to include logos or other company assets. Many remote photo editors work on a freelance basis, but some full-time jobs are available.

What does a remote photo editor do?

A Remote Photo Editor is a professional who edits and enhances digital photographs using image editing software while working from a remote location. They adjust elements such as color, brightness, contrast, and sharpness, and may remove unwanted objects or retouch images according to client specifications. Remote Photo Editors often collaborate with photographers, marketing teams, or media companies to ensure high-quality visual content. Their work is crucial in industries like e-commerce, publishing, advertising, and social media.

These abilities ensure high-quality visual output and efficient collaboration in a remote work environment.

Editors receive raw images and creative briefs, provide feedback, and deliver edits based on the project requirements. Clear communication and timely updates are essential to ensure alignment on artistic vision and deadlines. Building strong remote relationships helps maintain workflow efficiency and ensures high-quality results, even when team members are in different locations.

About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

Wirecutter is seeking a thoughtful, collaborative, and experienced supervising editor to manage a portion of the people and coverage on the technology team, which includes coverage of computers & networking, smartphones & tablets, and online privacy & security.

You will report directly to the Senior Editor, Technology to carry out our coverage plans that are deeply rooted in Wirecutter's mission to help our readers find the best products for their needs.

As a supervising editor, you will help the Senior Editor plan the section's coverage; propose and assign both time-sensitive and evergreen stories, product reviews, and buying guides; and edit articles in a variety of formats. You'll make sure our assignments stay on track, oversee the workloads and priorities of your reports as well as guide their career development, adhere to Wirecutter standards and processes, and reflect the advice and information most relevant to our readers. You'll also write short-form pieces and guides as needed.

You have a firm grasp of the technology landscape, as well as a strong understanding of industry trends. You will think inclusively and empathetically when guiding testing and reporting strategies, and are passionate about how best to serve our readers. You have superb people management and editing skills and are able to balance multiple editing projects with varying deadlines simultaneously.

This role can be based in New York City or remotely.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Senior Editor to set the strategy for the technology beat, and assign pieces to staff writers and freelancers

  • Project-manage long-form guides and short-form articles with writers; help to set priorities and deadlines; suggest and implement creative reporting strategies; and edit and revise drafts

  • People-manage at least one or more staff writers, approving timecards and expense reports and doing mid-year and annual reviews

  • Thoughtfully support writers' career development; collaborate with and coach writers

  • Oversee hiring and onboarding of freelance support staff as needed

  • Collaborate with the audience team on bringing more attention to our content; with our photo and art teams on compelling and informative visuals; and with our operations team on product ordering and testing logistics

  • Perform related work as assigned

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Senior Editor, Technology

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as an editor at an online media company with at least two years of experience managing writers

  • 3+ years of project and process management experience, including planning and working in an editorial environment

  • Exceptional editorial judgment and knowledge of service journalism and the consumer technology industry

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion balanced by skepticism of marketing claims and unproven ideas

  • Experience writing or editing long-form and short-form pieces and able to multitask between long-lead and short-lead deadlines

  • Experience creating test plans for product evaluation, collaborating with an art director and/or photo editor to present content visually, and expressing complex ideas using visualizations such as charts, graphs, or infographics

  • Experience with SEO (from an editorial perspective, not the technical aspects of optimization) and a sense of how to use web analytics data to make editorial decisions

  • Experience with social media platforms and a general understanding of which content performs best on each platform

The annual base pay range for this role is between $92,700.00 and $109,000.00.

Additional Compensation and Benefits:

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
