Remote Osep information

What is a Remote OSEP?

A Remote OSEP refers to a cybersecurity professional who has earned the Offensive Security Experienced Penetration Tester (OSEP) certification and works remotely. The OSEP certification demonstrates advanced skills in penetration testing, especially in areas such as bypassing security mechanisms, lateral movement, and exploiting vulnerabilities in complex environments. Remote OSEPs typically conduct security assessments, penetration tests, and red team exercises for clients or employers from a remote location, using secure connections and specialized tools. Their work is essential for identifying and helping organizations mitigate advanced security threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote OSEP, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote OSEP, you need advanced knowledge of penetration testing, exploit development, and red teaming, typically validated by earning the Offensive Security Experienced Professional (OSEP) certification. Proficiency with tools like Metasploit, Cobalt Strike, Burp Suite, and scripting languages such as Python or PowerShell is vital. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and clear written communication make candidates stand out in this security role. These skills enable effective identification and exploitation of vulnerabilities while delivering actionable security recommendations to clients or employers.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote OSEPs and how can they navigate them effectively?

Remote Offensive Security Engineers (OSEPs) often face challenges such as coordinating penetration tests across multiple time zones, maintaining secure communication channels, and building rapport with distributed teams. To succeed, it's essential to establish clear communication protocols, use secure collaboration tools, and proactively schedule regular check-ins with both clients and internal teams. Additionally, staying organized and documenting findings meticulously helps ensure that remote work does not hinder the quality or timeliness of security assessments.

Job Description:

Job Title
Advanced OT System Specialist

Collaborate with Innovative 3Mers Around the World

Choosing where to start and grow your career has a major impact on your professional and personal life, so it's equally important you know that the company that you choose to work at, and its leaders, will support and guide you. With a wide variety of people, global locations, technologies and products, 3M is a place where you can collaborate with other curious, creative 3Mers.

This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military experience to a 3M career.

The Impact You'll Make in this Role
In this role, you will help reduce operational risk across 3M's manufacturing environments by identifying unintended connectivity, validating OT infrastructure, and uncovering unmanaged technologies that could create exposure between plant systems and broader company networks. Your work will strengthen site readiness, improve visibility into manufacturing technology environments, verify remediation effectiveness, and support repeatable technical validation practices that help protect operational continuity, system reliability, and 3M's global manufacturing resilience.

As an Advanced OT System Specialist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Leading technical assessments across manufacturing sites to identify unintended connections between OT equipment, business networks, wireless networks, remote systems, and the internet
  • Validating OT devices, infrastructure, remote-access tools, and configurations to identify conditions that may bypass established architecture or create unintended access pathways
  • Performing site pre-assessment reviews that help field teams arrive with a targeted understanding of potential gaps and areas requiring investigation
  • Verifying remediation actions to confirm identified connectivity and infrastructure gaps have been addressed and determine whether additional action is needed
  • Establishing repeatable methods to improve visibility into unknown or unmanaged technologies, services, connections, and changes within manufacturing environments
  • Conducting recurring technical reviews that help identify newly introduced risks and strengthen the security, reliability, and resilience of 3M's global manufacturing operations
  • Constructing and facilitating tabletop drills that validate operational response, escalation paths, roles and responsibilities, recovery processes, and site readiness

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start)
  • Five (5) years of Cybersecurity and Information Assurance in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Five (5) years of Offensive Security Experience in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Current, valid Driver's License.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Advanced Technical Assessment Experience - Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex enterprise and manufacturing environments, identify unintended connectivity, technical weaknesses, and potential access pathways.
  • OT / Critical Infrastructure Experience - Experience working with industrial, manufacturing, or other critical infrastructure environments where availability, operational continuity, and risk must be balanced.
  • Network & Infrastructure Expertise - Strong technical knowledge of networking, firewalls, remote access, identity, endpoints, servers, wireless technologies, and internal/external connectivity.
  • Technical Exposure & Validation Experience - Experience developing repeatable methods for evaluating external and internal systems, identifying gaps, validating corrective actions, and conducting recurring technical reviews.
  • Tabletop Exercise Leadership - Experience developing, facilitating, and leading tabletop exercises that validate operational response, escalation paths, roles and responsibilities, recovery processes, and organizational readiness.
  • Advanced Technical Credentials - Advanced industry certifications such as OSEE, OSEP, OSCP, CISSP, or equivalent, demonstrating deep hands-on technical assessment, systems, and advanced security expertise.
